There are a couple of pictures floating around that are far worse than that. Horrific accident.

MagSeven, I don't really want to see them.
Wonder how hot the water is that VANOC will find themselves in.

Shudder. I honestly didn't realise how dangerous that sport could be. Stupid of me, I suppose.

VANOC dealt with it very well IMHO. ANY other comments should be made AFTER the investigation.
The opening was very hard, I'm pleased that Georgia are going to continue.

It was interesting that a couple of weeks ago that safety concerns were raised on Ski Sunday (and other media), because of the restrictions the Canadians had placed on the use of the luge course for practice by anyone other than the Canadian team. I presume more practice time over an extended period means they don’t have to go full tilt on their few practice runs (and possibly overcook it) in the days immediately preceding the games, allowing familiarity / memory to be built up over time.
The luge looks such a dangerous sport, but we don’t expect this. I hope that if the course is considered (too) dangerous that they have the good sense to call the competitions off, allow more practice, or make changes to slow things up a bit rather than risking more lives. I guess there is a lot of pressure on competitors to compete even in the face of overwhelming fear when at the start of an Olympic event. It would take a big man or woman to walk away at that point.
Gutted that this event has put a damper on the excitement of the games.

ringingmaster, I understand that since the accident the wall is/has been built up further where Kumaritashvili left the track.

You know it makes sense.

I guess they simply were not expecting anyone to leave the track in quite that way at that place. Accidents like that happen in skiing too, just think of the way Beltrametti went through all the netting in Val D'Isere and broke his neck against a pylon, or the way Uli Mayer broke her neck and died on the Kandahar in Garmisch. In both cases the organisers never believed that anyone would fly in quite the way that they did at those places When all is said and done, there is always a risk involved in hurtling yourself down a mountain at 120+Km/H

I was surprised at all the stanchions immediately to the side of the track. That seems to guarantee serious injury or death to anyone leaving the course, which I think is not so rare in these events.

parlor, if you knew Nick at all you would know that is very very far from the truth.
Snowheads is not a coroners court or a journal of record. It is a place where people get to discuss events in whatever way they want. We don't have to wait till all the facts are in, or an enquiry to speculate. If you don't like that, that's tough. Your personal insult to achilles is way out of order.

They are also starting from 200m further down the track, which means they will be a little slower all the way down.

Do these things have multiple starts built in, or have they done a quick engineerting job? I am sure the clip I have just seen of a practice run looked like a flat run in, rather than starting on a hill.

ringingmaster, From what I hard on the television, I believe this one was intended to be the Women's start, so yes they do have multiple start positions built in.

The other Georgian luge athelete has pulled out, I saw at some point during the night.
If it's any matter guys, we were discussing Noar's tragic death at work last night. Speculation is human nature. As long as we keep at the forefront of our minds the real main important issue which is that someone died and that is very, very sad.

ringingmaster, watch the start of the luge that was shown last night. As the shot shows the athelete leaving the starting gate, the shot looking down the track, you can see 2 other tracks come in and join the main one. it looks like this --> \|/ with the centre one being the current track used.
