Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Rauris Austria

Usually ski France (Grand Massif/Morzine) but have decided to go to Austria this year. Two of us are intermediates and one a relative newby. We're based in Rauris but have a car. Any ideas of where else to ski with a group of varying abilities as Rauris looks small? Thanks

bazzer1979, If your not in ski school you'll ski the resort in a day but you'll be tempted to do it all a few times 'cos its so quiet ! You're about 30 mins from Zell am see but make sure you get the Salzburg super ski pass and not just the Rauris local pass - not a whole lot in the difference in the price. From the Zell area take your pick - Saalbach maybe, any of the "Steins" or a bit further away to Schladming etc. Enjoy Smile

Rauris is quite a good site, bit quiet but OK Happy only 4 pubs so to speak. I stayed at the Hotel Alpina, master class cuisine for sure, so go half board wink The runs, basically two main slopes as you look up the mountain, bit of a camel treck to get to one from the other mid mountain but you can access either from the bottom of the mountain no probs.

I found the right hand slopes very quiet when I was there which was great as I taught myself to powder ski and just followed the tracks left earlier. Bit daunting at first as you needed a bit more speed to follow the tracks ( I had normal carving skis) but well worth the effort skiing the side pistes which were quite deep Happy I found some other runs the next day on the main slope of to the left before the slalom course which was also useful to practice on.
Biggest pain was the Looooooonnnngest T bar in the World on the right hand slope Sad

For me, definitely worth the trip, as I learnt a wee bit more snowHead

We learned to ski in Rauris on our first ever ski holiday in 2010. We were with the local ski school, Adventure Rauris, and had a fantastic experience, with a great instructor. The resort is small, but the advantage for the newby in your group is that there are blue runs from the top of the mountain so you will not get stuck at village level.

I have only been to Rauris once, last year, but I enjoyed it very much and hope to go back again this season. I wrote quite a long report on that day in this thread with several photos that might be of interest to you.

As well as the other areas mentioned above, the Kitzsteinhorn glacier skiing is nearby as well as the lower Kaprun ski area on the Maiskogel. You could also reach St. Johann im Pongau/Alpendorf without too much of a drive and from there ski over to Wagrain (even linking to Flachau with the G-Link cable car - I haven't been there since this opened, so I don't know how far you can manage in a day). The Hochkönig area would also be possible, from either Dienten or Mühlbach. So you certainly have plenty of choice Very Happy
