Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Avoriaz or Tignes for high mileage, long runs?

 Poster: A snowHead

Hi

I am in between selecting either Avoriaz (link to PDS) or Tignes this year. Looking to do nice long runs, full days and mostly intermediate. It seems from reviews that both have plenty of mileage ability but Avoriaz (PDS) has much less intermediate options? Any opinions as to whether they are that different?

many thanks

Been to avoriaz 5 times in last 6 years, im heading out to Chatel (also part of the PDS) on tuesday as i have still not covered the whole area, You will not get bored and there is lots of great skiing, cruising reds and blues. Blush

Baxter1,
They are quite different but both offer plenty of decent long runs. Both are pretty ugly places in their own right but have decent skiing. Avoriaz has much lower altitude skiing which means that in bad weather there si alot more to do below the tree line and probably more attractive variation. On the other hand those same runs will suffer if there is aspell of warm weather.
Tignes area is more tightly linked whereas Potes de Soleil is bigger but with some links that are not quite as well linked and for the more far flung places a short bus trip may be part of your itinerary.

Of the two I'd take Tignes, I found the runs in avoriaz a little shorter, and imo the 'circuit' is a bit of a pain - queues! Both are great places though, I'm sure you'd be happy at either. aj xx

I'd tend to go for Tignes, too - slicker links, by a long way. And certainly better if the weather gets a bit warm. Though fiddling round visiting the different PdS centres has its charms, too and perhaps the skiing there is more varied.

I would definitely go for Tignes. I agree with a.j. that the PDS circuit is rather disjointed with the need for buses and quite a bit of walking. Wheras the skiing between Tignes and Val D'Isere is seamless and seamingly endless too.
