saintstephen, Firstly, welcome to Snowheads!!
It's been said a million times.. try before you buy. It is a real pain.. but well worth it in the long run. You don't say where you're going, but in French resorts they will normally refund hire charges if you end up buying a pair. They may be a little more expensive out there, but I eventually bought a pair of Rossi SC80's in Les Arcs for 380E that I could have got on fleabay over here for 350GBP, not bad considering I tried a dozen or so pairs (most only lasting one run though) .
Not what you want to hear...

In terms of build quality & performance the Storm Inferno's are waaay ahead of any of the others on your list. And they're no heavier than any other wooden cored metal top sheet ski. They come in the flat so would be the dearest as you'd also need plates & bindings but deals can be done

Thanks for the advice and the welcome I am going to Oberstdorf, its on the german-austrian border, the mountains are the nebelhorn and the fellhorn also a smaller sollereck. I was intending on trying and buying and probably will do that but I only have a week and every minute is precious. If possible I would consider taking a chance.

You can't just go in the shop at the end of each ski day and say "what else do you have?", be out in 20 mins or less?

I have searched the web but can find no review of the "Elan Speedwave 11" the link is posted above, has anyone any experience of these skis ?? Thanks

Speedwave 11.. weird one.
Seems the 11 is a model made for intersport. There's an 11 model on the dutch elan site, with a different picture though. The model there has waveflex, PST sidewall and Power Woodcore.
The dutch elan site doesn't mention the Lithium thing, but it's safe to assume it's present.
I would treat this one as a speedwave 10 copy of the '07-'08 season.

Thanks, that helps, it states for "recommended length -5 / -10 cm" my for my weight of 72kg and hieght of 182cm I had thought of 168cm, does this mean I should go smaller ?
I cannot wait until I can start helping posters here instead of only looking for advice

saintstephen, 168 would work for your size, but its really a lower performance ski than I thought you were looking for. If picking a purely piste ski (which that is), your original post read as Speedwave 12 level minimum.

I've just contacted the seller and they have said they could not garantee delivery on time for my holiday, so it looks like I'll have to try my luck in Oberstdorf to find a suitable shop.
I am hoping to try the Storm inferno, Salomon equipe 24hrs & head peak 73 and one other shop selected one.

Yes your correct my budget was about the €400, I am new to all this and thought I might be picking up a bargain with the Elans at €250, I suppose the old saying is true.... you get what you pay for !!!

Buying skis is a very complicated and stressful experience !!!
Flying out tomorrow morning and having rang every shop in Oberstdorf realised that the selection over there is quite limited (even for the German brand Volkl) I went for a speculative look in Snow & Rock in Dublin.
At the end of it all walked out with the Salomon X-Wing Tornado Titanium http://shop.denig.nl/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/s/a/salomon-xw-tornado.jpg
As usual its different from what I started looking forwhich was a piste carver. Ended up with a all mountain ski with a piste biased, so it looks like I will put my first little powder excursion
I think I would have bought the equipe 24 series if they had them in stock and I came so close to getting the Aero X, I was a little scared of the stiff tail, in the end I thought the tornado was the better ski for what I need now.
The RRP is €655 but S&R have a 20% sale on which took €131 off.
Just have to test it out tomorrow on the Nebelhorn!
