Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I've been reading over on Epic how some ski manufacturers don't seem to always put the best tune on their skis when they leave the factory (e.g. edge angles which cause the skis to under-perform). People seem to favour re-tuning them themselves (or getting a reliable ski tech to do so) after they've bought them, giving something like 1 degree on the base and 3 degrees on the side. I was wondering whether ski rental shops effectively enforce a standard tune on all the skis, however they come from the factory, and if so, does anyone know what it's likely to be? I imagine it will vary according to the skill of the shop as well as whether they can be bothered or not.
A couple of years ago I skied at Red Resort in Canada and on the first day I didn't get on at all well with my new
Blizzard
skis I had brought over, so that evening I left them with the tech shop and they put their standard tune on them, which was 1 degree on the base and 2 or 2.5 on the side, and the following day the skis were hugely better. I'm sure they're atypical, though - Red is a place with a VERY high average level of technical ability among the skiers, and a very high number of 'regulars'. It's probably going to be rather different in your average Alpine resort where there's a constant throughput of week-a-year Brit skiers who may not know that their hire skis are not properly looked after - the lazier shops can get away with rather more.

AFAIK most hire place will put a couple of degrees on the edge angle as standard, esp if you take em back after a day and accuse them of being blunt! best to ask though......

You seem to have answered yourself.
My guess would be 1/1 but how close a shop's _claimed_ 1/1 is to a _real_ 1/1 is also subject to

So, you might, for all anyone can say as part of a hand-waving generalisation, be getting 2.3/1 on those nice new Head Monsters or whatever.

I don't have any experience with the machines, but is it that easy to mess up a full auto edge angle? I'm guessing the machine is set at 1/2 and they just run all the ski's through every X weeks of rental?
