Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

School holiday dates Easter 2006

We're thinking of taking the kids with us next season, so the dreaded school holidays dates which I've never had to do before.

Anyway, half term holidays oviously mobbed and pricy, but Edinburgh schools are off April 1-17, so it looks as if luckily the first week of Easter will not coincide with French or Swiss holidays.

Can anyone tell me what dates the English schools are off next year ? Does it vary area to area ?

TIA snowHead

In my area (Richmond upon Thames) Easter hols seem to be 31.03- 18.04.06 for state schools, although at least one public school is out from 05-26.04.06, apparently.

In some ways it is helpful that there is conformity across the autorities. For us, Zits 1 and 3 are in Hampshire schools, Zit 2 is in a Berkshire school and Mrs Z teaches in a school that adopts the Surrey timetable. This can make holiday planning a little difficult. rolling eyes

There have been lots of discussions about changing the pattern of the school year slightly, one consequence of which would be to fix the 'Spring break' for the first two weeks of April regardless of where Easter falls. There seems to be wide agreement on making this change, so many if not all local education authorities will eventually adopt this holiday pattern.

As of 2007, all schools should be adopting the "spring break". However, many local authorities have decided to adopt this as of this year. For the next two years there will be disparity...but all should even out after that.

There's a proposal in at least some areas to move to a 6 term year in the state sector. I believe my LEA will adopt that within the next couple of years. What effect that will have on holiday prices at school hol times, who knows? I bet that they don't go down.

richmond, I don't think it will have any effect. Pupils will still have the same holiday entitlement, so there will still be supply and demand issues which allow tour operators to charge higher prices during school holidays. In summary the changes are: one week less holiday in the summer; two weeks break in October (up from one week); two weeks at Christmas; one week in February; two weeks at the biginning of April; one week at the end of May.

rob@rar.org.uk, I didn't know the timings of the new hols, which are obviously not very different from the current ones. I thought that there might be more hols in the main ski season, which might (conceivably) have reduced demand and thus prices during any one week.

richmond,

we have the 6 term year now in Bristol. Doesn't make much of a difference except that (some) half terms are longer and (all) holidays are shorter - for example the summer holiday this year is 22nd July - 31st August.
