Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Shortening composite poles and attaching straps

I've just cut down some K2 fibreglass poles for my wife.

Originally, the wrist straps were screwed into the pole. The tops of the hollow poles were filled with some sort of resin and the straps were screwed into that.

Unfortunately, the screws sheared on removal so i've no idea how long they are.

I've drilled a pilot hole in the pole for a self tapper, filled the top of the pole with Silicone and then screwed the self tapper into the pole and the silicone. The self tapper is long enough to go through most of the diameter of the pole but is only tapped into one wall thickness. The rest of the self tapper is bedded in the silicone.

I've now got doubts as to whether it will be strong enough.

Any comments from those that have done this before?

Sounds like it might be OK but could depend on how she uses the straps. If they are just there to stop you dropping the poles then it may well work, if she uses the straps (properly) when poleing/skating maybe not. Give it a go and if they fail buy some new ones.

She doesn't use the straps. They're purely there to stop her dropping them.

I've got her old ali poles that we'll take with us so we've got a fall back position if it goes wrong. Just hoping to get it right from the off. Probably should have filled the tops of the poles with araladite or heat glue instead of silicon. Crying or Very sad
