 Poster: A snowHead

As part of a two week trip next winter we are hoping to stay a week in Zermatt, but as apartments etc seem very expensive there are looking at the possibility of staying in a Hostel (we are used to climbing huts etc so a hostel is not alien to us!).
Has anyone stayed at either the Zermatt Youth Hostel, or the independent Matterhorn Hostel? Opinions welcome please?

jbob, That waas the other place I looked at online a while back - similar price to the Matterhorn Hostel. Have you stayed there?

Matterhorn Hostel had a price board outside last week displaying Sfr34 per night, dorm accom. Now has "Sparky's Bar" on the ground floor by the look of it.

Stayed in the Zermatt youth hostel over Easter a few years ago. Food okay but It's a bit of a trek up the hill from the Kleinmatterhorn lift station. I don't recall it being especially cheap: even through there were 8 of us in the attic room on a single massive bed (very like you find in the more basic mountain huts).

RobinS, I have stayed there, it was fine plus there was a kitchen to cook your own food, but it was a long time ago so it could have changed.

I've stayed at the Testa Grigia, which is on the main street, and at similar prices, but includes breakfast. Worth considering

Not stayed at it, but the one thats got Sparkys bar, seems okay and Sparkys is a good place for quiet reasonably cheap beers and foods decent enough aswell. Good location just down from the KM lift and not far from the main drag after you've dumped you gear..

Thanks for the comments so, we are continuing to look at options including some apartments as well, but one thing has struck me as odd - stuff is much more booked up, and apartments are more expensive for the week commencing 5th March than they are the previous week commencing 26th February - anyone know why this is?

Colin B, Thanks - looks like we may do Zermatt the first week then, and Nendaz (where the prices don't change on Interhome apartments) the second week.

RobinS, Nendaz is in the French part, I think they only celebrate Fasching in the German part. This year Fasching co-incided with half term and I was in Laax, didn't seem busy at all though.

Colin B, they celebrate in the Romande as well, but call it Carnaval. Along with New Year, it's our peak week of the season.
