Hey.
By car, what are the journey times (approximately) to get from, say:
Vaujany <-> Alpe d'Huez
Vaujany <-> Oz
Oz <-> Alpe d'Huez
?
I know what Google Maps says, and it looks suspiciously easy. About half an hour for each journey. Is this actually resonable, or are the roads slower than it thinks (or worse - shut for the winter)?
Secondly, does a bus route do the rounds, and if so how long does it take, and cost?
TIA

Vaujany -> ADH is probably 40-45mins
Oz -> ADH maybe 5 mins less (assuming you go through Bourg d'Oisans - there is a route through Villard Reculas which may shave off 5 mins but not for the faint hearted)
Vaujany -> Oz probably 25-30mins
Roads are usually clear unless it has dumped it down in the last couple of hours
You could do it by bus but you're relying on normal public transport rather than dedicated resort buses. Would be infrequent and involve changes

I've just put up some notes on our trip to Vaujany in the resort review thread.
Best route in winter is to go to valley floor unless you want to be putting chains on and off. I can confer with the journey times above. We didn't see any buses.

paulio, there's no bus, and I'd put in nearer an hour for Alpe d'Huez to Vaujany. You do realise you can ski between all those places, I assume?

Yep.
A baby can't though.
Unless we wear him in a sort of 'rucksack' I suppose. Does anyone happen to know whether or not this is advisable?
|

|
|
paulio, I think it's probably compulsory.

I've skied with my daughter in a purpose made backpack (papoose or baby carrier or whatever they're called). No problem if you take it steadily, but it probably wouldn't pass 'elf & safety rules these days.

Just put the child into a creche all day so you can both enjoy a full days skiing

Although that rucksack thing was in jest, I am now wondering if they'll let a 5mth old on the cable cars and so on. That could help avoid a car journey or two.
There's an incomplete list here, which is encouraging:
http://www.alpedhueznet.com/lift-system-and-passes/alpe-d-huez-lift-system-winter.htm
but the names of those gondolas and cable cars isn't quite in concert with what they're called on the piste map. There seem to be two called Alpette for starters...
I'm confussed.

paulio, I've been to ADH a couple of times and still have a paper piste map. Looks like you can do Vaujany to Oz to ADH all on cable cars/gondolas. Vaujany Alpette, Alpette, Poutrans and DMC. Must be easier and I'm sure they would let babies on.
Failing that take the au pair!

If I had an au pair, I'd have two children.

You know it makes sense.
|
Alpe d'Huez to Oz: up the first leg of the DMC, down the Poutran.
You can't get from Oz to Vaujany on foot without walking rather a long way down the piste from the top of the Alpette telecabine, which isn't a very good idea.

Lizzard, paulio,
But you can walk about 100m from the top of the alpette to the cable car and take that down in to Vaujany, or have I misunderstood the question ?

skitow, ah, but can you take a nipper on it (the cable car down from Alpette to Vaujany)? That link I found suggests maybe not, or at least it's inconclusive.
I mailed the tourist office a few days back btw, but no response, which is why I'm still banging on about it on here.

Tourist office replied and said (I precis) 'yes that will be fine'.
Nary even a tut.

He doesn't especially. The variety might be nice for the 'friend' we've tricked into babysitting for us though.

After I broke my shoulder I did Vaujany-AdH on foot so if a cripple like me can do it it's OK for a youngster. Takes a while though and you have to cross through Oz, quicker on skis. You need to ensure you have plenty of time to make the connections before the lifts close.

Hello
Does anyone know where the details of the shuttles between Alpe d'Huez and Les 2 Alpes are? Is there any way using public transport to get to Sauze?
Thanks

darbyrw, by helicopter, daily depending on the weather; by bus every Wednesday and Thursday. And no, not really.

paulio, I'd strongly advise not carrying around a small child in a backpack when skiing. In the best places (we used a superb facility at Arc 1600) there is very good specialised daycare for infants and toddlers.
Childen's limbs can be subject to severe exposure in sub-zero temps, particularly when immobile by being strapped into a pack. There have been terrible cases of frostbite and amputation.
