A friend is trying to persuade me NOT to be sensible and say I can't afford a 3rd skiing trip this year (Vallandry in Feb & L2A in June being the already planned two). She says we should be able to find something very good value, not too far from Geneva. We have the period Tues 25th March to Fri 4th April in which to do so. I am still not sure I can afford it (or can persuade hubby that it is a good idea!) but she'll be going anyway with her student daughter.
So, SHs - thinking caps on - ideas please that either would work for 2 or 3 people:
3 or 4 day catered deal
Cheap, ideally inclusive of transfers/lift pass
Not too far from Geneva (can fly there from Doncaster with ThomsonFly)
Suitable for novice(me!) and experts (them!)

Slovenia, more specifically, Krvavec (http://www.rtc-krvavec.si/en/). 12km from Ljubljana airport. Not much challenging skiing but super cheap and good fun...take in a night out in Ljubljana too!

Two options if you can get there
Gavarnie/Gedre, or Luz in France.... Fly to Pau, Biarritz, or Toulouse and hire a car. Stay in Lourdes (yes I know, but its empty and cheap right now) Ski/boots hire €30 for 4 days, piste pass €45, car hire €90, accomodation €25 per night... not many tourists, but everything from nearly flat greens to reds that should've been black and I didnt event look at the blacks. small resort, but good for a cheap weekend, except the 40 mins drive there and back.
Or You can fly to Geneva and transfer by car, bus or train to Cervinia
The end of march is high season due to easter (and st. Patricks day), but I've been sussing out Cervinia (ok I know its not the cheapest resort, nor the liveliest) - spoke to friends of mine and the price for accomodation goes from €490 B&B to €370 half board for a week (B&B is even cheaper and you can eat out for €10 as long as you stay on the opposite side of the main street from the slopes... specials kick in in April including short breaks - snow sure (skiied there last July!) with their Reds and some Blues having been made more difficult this year - option for Zermat runs are there for advanced skiiers, subject to weather. Normal rates are about €90 for ski/boot hire, but the lift pass is about €180 for a week. I stay in a family run hotel on the outskirts of the village, who normally arrange everything for me, but let me pay directly for passes and hire, passing the discount onto me
And if you're looking for some mad fun check out fans de sport for air-boarding (just silly mad snow surfing) and tandem paragliding - tell Jean Claude Owen sent you

We are off to Portes de soleil area tomorrow. Got flights to Geneva and then found a company called www.hikeandski.com who have done us a good deal for 3 nights catered incl transfers. I'll let you know if they are any good when we get back on Monday. Catered chalet takes up to 8, but we are a group of 6.

Not necessarily good advice for Butterfly, but this quick break work well for me...
Take an early Friday morning Ryan Air flight out of Stansted to Friedrichstafen, hire a car for 3 days from airport and drive to St Anton (about 1hr 30 minutes). We found reasonable accommodation at the Hotel Manfred (perfectly situated in town) with a 5 minute walk to the Galzig lift. Drive back late Sunday evening.
This gave us 2 and a half days skiing at a reasonable price in a fantastic town!

I did 3 days with Jolly Good Alpine Adventures in Morzine, staying in their Sherpa chalet for £300 for 2 of us. Weds night to sat night in mid January.
I think I got that very good deal because I'd used them before and was really after self catering and kept e-mailing them with various alternatives to make it cheaper.
Even included transfers from Geneva.
A wee bit basic, but comfortable enough, good food, plenty of wine, bar attached and great people
(I have to ensure I get a good deal next year as well ! )
Hard to beat !

Butterfly, This is the place you want butterbean - slightly awkward from Geneva if it's foggy, but otherwise tip-top. Lovely sun-trap, I can tell you...

Opps... by car... bus... or bus and train
to be exact
Thanks for spotting that red
Just watch out for the private transfer buses... for example, Milan Malpensa to Cervinia, public transport (SUADA) €18 return, private €60 one-way, 4 day car hire €90 - with 4 of us we choose the car even adding the chains (€45) which we nearly had to use (someday I wont bother taking them and then need them!!!)

Crystal now have a chalet in Val d'Isere that does package short breaks Thu-Sun or Sun-Thu - Chalet Bruyeres. I was there the other week for £190 for 4 days flights transfers, chalet board. Nothing special but pretty cheap.

Butterfly, Another vote for Ski White Gold. I was there 11Jan for 3 nights in their Chalet Montana and paid £180 for a single room, catered and incl transfers. They have twins, triples and family rooms. Food was fantastic - Helen the chef is amazing. Ruth & Dave are great hosts. The ski but stops very close to the end of the drive. If there's no bus at the time you want to go, or you miss one coming back Ruth or Dave will drive you. The nearest ski area is Les Lindaret which links to Avoriaz and Chatel and the rest of PdS.
backhojo, You'll have a great time - it's a lovely place. Say Hi to Ruth & Dave from me & Jon!

All these sound cheaper than doing a stand alone flights, car hire, accommodation option.
Only downside I would imagine is that the transfers can take some time depending on the resort?

GordonFreeman, We had to wait just under an hour to share a minibus transfer with 3 other people on another flight. We were first drop so transfer was about 1hr 30mins to Montriond. We shared with 4 other people on the way back, 2 from the same chalet & 2 others. Return journey took about 2 hours due to the pick up of the other 2 and as we hit Geneva Monday morning rush hour. All in all though much less stressful that driving would have been for me - not having driven there before.

True although driving isn't too bad. Mind you, I have a satnav with European maps.
It is more expensive renting though and short stay hotel accommodation...

Don't know if you're sorted yet. The way I have found some flexible places to stay have been through websites where various chalet owner contact you directly without needing to phone everyone. The links are:

And www.chaletfinder.co.uk
Hope this helps
