Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

pas de la casa and kids?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Is pas any good for kids? I taking two at half term 13th feb for a week...aged 8 and 10 at the Hotel Alaska, it is their first time skiing.
I'm worried cos all the reviews make it sound like Blackpool on a Friday night...
Any ideas for activities for families?

badgerdot, welcome to snowHead snowheads snowHead . Unfortunately the reviews are right. Depending on your Hotel it could be Blackpool. There is a sports centre so you could abuse their facilities swimming etc. We recently returned from a four star hotel - hoping the cost would put off the noise makers to no avail. If you cannot beat them - join them. On a more positive note the skiing is excellent. They have just had a big dump of snow in the last few days.

I have to agree with Paul Mason, but all is not lost !!

I found the food/drink reasonable, and I got a great deal on my ski boots there !! And the piste conditions should be good too Smile

I agree with the above- its very lively, but ive seen plenty of families with kids there and they all seemed to be having a great time!

Just interested in who suggested that it would be a good resort for you to go to ?

I'll be there with my wife and three kids at the same time - my three are 9, 7 & 5. We took them last year as well, and had a good time. As I've said before about Pas, I reckon being in a hotel up the hill helped, as we didn't notice much rowdy behaviour. I'm hoping that'll work again this year. I'll let you all know.

Thanks guys...dunno if that reassured me or not....I like lively as much as the next person...I just don't like answering questions like "Mum ...why has that lady got her boobies hanging out?...and why is that man showing his bottom?"

A travel agent from 2can travel said it was lively but perhaps I misunderstood...I thought he just meant loads to do....

Ahh well I'm sure we will enjoy it anyway....my kids love Blackpool!!

btw Has anyone stayed in the Alska aparthotel before? I can't find any reviews...its supposed to be a 4*.

I needn't have worried...it was fine!
Pas is not as pretty as Soldeau, but if you want nice wide pistes, and plenty of safe well manned lifts...then this is a great place for kids.
Most families with small children are not really out late at night when the revelling is going on so you miss all that...the fact that we stayed in a hotel up the hill probably helped...and that there were blizzards every night that you could barely stand up in!
There were plenty of families at this resort with kids of all ages...so don't be put off!

Where did you stay, Badgerdot? We were in the Himilaia. A good week, if a bit frustrating at the start on account of the lifts being closed.

Are there answers to these questions (apart from "Because s/he can.")?

badgerdot, Legal Steve out of interest did either of you ski over to Soldeau from Pas now it's all covered on the one pass? It is years since I went to Pas but quite fancy going to Soldeau now both areas are linked.

I got there on one day with our instructor, but it's quite "do-able" (nice, too). I had two constraints - 1) Lessons in the afternoon (well worth it at my current standard of technique) and 2) a mixed party of skiers (me and the kids) and non-skiers (my wife and our friends - family of 4), which made it difficult to get over more than that.

I have to say (if I haven't said it before) that Grau Roig offered loads of variety, and if I'd had it my way I probably wouldn't have left there much.

Having said that, it was amazing to go from one valley to the next, to the next, etc, and to be separated from (most) human contact - couldn't see a building (other than a lift station) for miles. It was great.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

thanks Steve, yes the valley beyond Grau Roig had untracked snow for days last time I was in Pas even though all the main slopes to Pas were really busy.

I stayed in the Manzano "up the hill" just above the Himilaia.
It would have been quite enough if we were not in the apartment directly above the bar and every time the front door banged shut it rattled my teeth (bit crappy that at 4am). Food was awful but you could live on it for a day or two.
Up the hill has the advantage of being quieter and pretty near ski in ski out, with the disadvantage of having to crawl up the hill when boozed up yourself.
Loved every minute of it thought bruises, sleepless nights and all.

I'm off to the similar duty free resort of Livigno tomorrow. I hope it is just a little more cultured - probably not though.

 You know it makes sense.

coldworld I did pluck up the courage to "go over the top" on my third day skiing. I went over with my nine year old son, it was 9.00am (he was eager) and so noone was about...I was a little nervous, but it was lovely...very pretty well marked pistes with trees and such. The lift staff were marvellously helpful. Someone told me that you can now go from pas right the way to the capital Andorra le vella by catching all the connecting lifts (they are two way apparently) I dont know how true this is...but I'm gonna give that a go next year...maybe I could ski it...hmmm.

Legal SteveI stayed at the Alaska ...its a 4* aparthotel 50 m from the piste...we loved it...it had a fully equipped spa with steam room sauna jaccuzzi sunbeds etc oh and a gym...as if you needed more exercise. It was quite reasonable as you could spend all day in there for 10 euros...bliss! A few people from the hotel Magic were in there many a night. The rooms are studio style with a kitchen area(great for when you too knacked to go out and the Spar supermarket just across the way)...lovely bathrooms cleaning daily and staff absolutely fantastic.

One thing thing to remember though is that the transfer bus drops and picks you up from the bottom of town and you have to struggle a mile uphill to get to the hotel (buses wont go up) with two very tired children and a load of cases that was not a good start to the holiday...dress prepared to all those people who were giving me queer looks as I trudged up the hill in my fake fur coat and high heeled boots...I now know what you were laughing at Embarassed I soon abandoned all notion of looking stylish and spent the rest of the hol looking like a bag lady with a tina turner wig!...you live and learn..

It was a very disappointing start I agree(pistes closed 3 days)...but I spoke to one family who got trapped with two young kids in a coach on the mountain for 24 hours...they then had to wait at the resort for 4 days for their cases to be dug out! So we were lucky...
