Poster: A snowHead
|
At the end of yesterday's Ski Sunday their was talk of next week's show featuring the Giant Slalom at Adelboden. They referred to this as a 'Classic'. I've heard mention of Kitzbuhel and Wengen as classics, and also the Schladming night slalom.
Does anyone know what constitutes a classic ? Are there only a limited number of them, like in golf or tennis where you have the 4 majors ?

Have a look at this link.
http://www.club5.com/en/index.php
The original Club 5 were Val d'Isere, Val Gardena, Wengen, Kitzbuehel and Garmisch. The list has grown as other venues have seen teh value in co-promotion.
There have been a number of 'Classics' including the Arlberg Kandahar.
A number of people are critical of the FIS approach to promoting the sport hence the advent of the European Ski Federation and the first European Indoor Championships held in Amneville at eh start of the Winter.
Shame it's not better packaged, a la F1 IMHO..
But, to et back to the point, Classic is a word commentators overuse,,,,, although Adelboden ass a GS venue is certainly one of the most challenging therefore exciting venues.
Cheers,
JC

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Cheers jc, very interesting. I agree that the packaging could be improved. You only need to do a web search for Alpine Classic Ski Races or Club 5 Ski to see how few results appear.
