Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Can £19.95 for a pair of socks be justified

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I was just perusing the S & R catalogue following an email notifying me about their new website and stumbled into the section on socks.

This is broadly what they had to say about the Smartwool PHD SKI MEDIUM

The Smartwool Women's Phd is a women's specific over-the-calf sock that provides medium cushioning in strategically placed areas to give comfort, protection and warmth to any level and intelligence of female skier. The 4-Degree banded fit system enhances the skiers intelligence via the Phd system in addition to the fit and support offered by the sock, while strategic mesh zones allow for maximum ventilation. If you find yourself in a whiteout, the Smartwool Phd Ski Sock will get you ladies home, keep you warm and help you win your chalet/hotel quizz nights. Fabric: 74% Merino Wool/25% Nylon/1% Elastic 100% c0wdoo

Is this the finest example of the Ernest Hemingway school of bull? Anyhow, £19.95 a pair - I ask you........

Howies has regular socks for £25 a pair. Can the price be justified? Yes.

Chasseur, A pair of socks that can get you home in a whiteout for £19.95? - a bargain I'd say! Do they have a mind of their own?, are they the skiing equivalent of 'Billys Boots'? Smile

You can't put a price on warm feet!! Once they get cold it's game over for me.

Not only do i spend £20 on socks, this year I have also bought a pair of silk socks to go underneath NehNeh

Same with gloves, I got the most expensive mittens I could find - both are worth every penny!!

Chasseur,
I have the mens ones............well worth the money, plus they keep your feet from smelling.......something to do with the fact that the bacteria cant attach to the micro fibres. Buy em, you'll be glad you did.

That might be like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted - unless those socks are so clever they can figure out how to stop the boots from reeking....... Laughing Mind you, the women's version probably know how..... NehNeh

Ellis were giving away the mens version in the goodie bag for filling in the ski test reviews. Having done 3 separate ski test sessions I ended up with 6 pairs. Should keep me going for a while and hoping they'll improve performance in white-out wink

In fact I was just about to ask - are these any good as I'm looking at the Smartwool Racer thin socks but my current mid-weight specialist ones I got in Tignes about 4 years ago still do the trick - mind you they were the equivalent price.

I would say they are JUST about worth it but I'd prefer it if someone can point me in the direction of where I can get these Smartwool PhD ones cheaper than EB or S&R's Falke ones....

What does that say about where women keep their brains? Is the corresponding product for blokes a helmet?

Sorry kevin mcclean but as the favoured choice for female skiers in Val d'Espair, I know they will only disappoint you. Unless you're undergoing gender realignment, naturally.... wink

psbbst, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to explain that this is marketing over substance and advise that Lidl in Cirencester are selling them at 74.5% less than S & R.

Jeez, another no-brainer. That's quite a bargain compare to the cost of those battery powered boot-warmers!!!

You don't even have to worry about the battery running out!

I want some new socks. I was going ask for recommendations but will look at the Smartwool ones. My spec list is: Must be Morino for warmth, must be structured for the foot/angle shape, must have silver to stop them getting smelly.

I have bought some good cycling socks and they definitely make a difference to foot comfort.

bar shaker - have a look at icebreaker's ski socks on Webtogs too. They don't have silver, but if you manage to make merino smelly you don't need silver, you need a doctor...

Is there a cheaper version suitable for only stupid female skiers?

Mattgcp, I am liking Icebreakers It has more % merino but the structure of Smartwool PHDs looks very good.

Edit- The Icebreakers do it for me and £19.95 in S+R. OK... off to Romford.
