I'm buying a helmet and wondering what people wear under it to protect their face. I normally ski with a hat and use a fleece neck gaiter to protect my chin and mouth and when its really cold I pull it right up over my nose and tuck it in at the back under my hat and under my goggles. I'm not sure how this is going to work with a helmet and am wondering what solutions other have? I've seen people using balaclavas but am thinking this might make the helmet a bit too hot. Or if people do use neck gaiters how does this work? Any thoughts?

Same as you usually use, or a balaclava if its very cold, or your helmet has lots of vents.

I have a balaclava which has a thickish neck band but just a thin membrane over the head. Works well without interfering with the fit of the helmet in really cold weather although in practice I have very seldom had to use it.

Hi CCL. Do you use anything else if not using a balaclava?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Ideally you wouldn't wear anything, as it could affect how well the helmet retains it's correct position on your head.
However, probably rather that than hypothermia - when it's cold I use a buff. Pull it up over your face, pull the back over the back of your head then fold back down to your neck again, stays in place really well. Probably all sorts of other contortions you could use as well.

bendiddley, No I don't need anything else even in fairly severe cold - the helmet is quite warm enough. I don't think I have worn the balaclava in the last few seasons which includes skiing in December and January. As clarky999 says, you don't want to affect the fit of the helmet. The thinness of the bit of my balaclava that goes over the skull doesn't affect it. I can't remember where I got it - Trespass maybe
Just don't try stuffing a thick beanie under the helmet. lol
Love the beard cap - but I grow my own.

bendiddley, There are quite a range of things you can wear now which don't effect fit at all. I have a protec thin cap, and also a thinbalaclava with a thin fleece lower part and thinner elasticated top portion. I don't usually need it unless it goes below -15 or windchill is high. Buffs I found too thick at the fleecy end - and rather rough at the cloth end.

Hi all. Thanks for your reply's. OK I've got a good idea now about balaclavas, but what I'm now wondering is how do you guys protect your faces from the cold? As said earlier I normally use a fleece neck gaiter (snood tube like thing) when I'm wearing a hat which I pull up over my face if its bad and tuck under my hat but I'm not sure how this will work with a helmet, has anyone tried anything else or succeeded with this option?

That's exactly what I do with the buff dude. Dries quick after getting wet from snow/breath too.

We've all turned into a bunch of big soft jessies. Snoods and balaclavas indeed. Unless there is genuine risk of skin freezing or frost nip (by which time most punters would not be on the hill or the hill would be closed), then there shouldn't be any need for anything other than your hat or helmet! Surely???

I assumed we were only talking about those situations. How else would you get a good goggle tan?!
(Btw though, there can be plenty of times when the lifts are open and it's cold enough/ the blizzard bad enough to pose a reasonably severe risk).

My neck gaiter doesn't affect the fit of my helemt in any way. It doesn't go under the helmet, just round my neck.
