Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

No, but I've been to where a ski slope would have been, had it not been summer at the time - at Sigulda.

Just one shortish slope, steepish I seem to remember, and a chairlift (with a mental on-rails bobsled next to it that I had a go on, and nearly shat myself).

It's a lovely place Latvia.

Here, look, that's me riding the chairlift back up with my friend Inga, if you zoom in really close. Note: bobsled rail.

Ah thanks for that. Yeah i have had a quick look at Sigulda, easy to get to from Riga by train or bus. Cant seem to find any prices to ski there though, or ski n boot hire.

Riga is gorgeous - we were there in September. We also got the train out of Latvia to the coast - to Jurmala, which is an upmarket summer resort. very nice and a fantastic unspoilt beach, with woods down to it and the town some way back from the beach. Worth a visit.

Anyway, from what we saw from our train trip - and from the air when coming in to land at Riga - the place is VERY flat. However, the following excellent online guide to Riga confirms that there is skiing!! Very Happy

The occupation museum in Riga is also worth a look - fascinating history of Riga's oppressed past under the Nazis and Communism. We had a couple of hours there but could have spent longer. It's free too.

And finally.....Before I went someone advised me that he had never been anywhere where there were so many gorgeous local women. Let's just say he was right Shocked Shocked

Enjoy your trip.

Latvia is one of the flattest places I've ever been and awfully full of pine trees. But Riga is indeed beautiful, with a delightful Paris-like ambience and some amazing buildings. I also visited Rundale Palace (designed by Rastrelli, who designed the Winter Palace in Petersburg) it's stunning. And I went to Kuldiga (the old town) which is also charming, with many old buildings and the largest waterfall - widthways! - in Europe. My father was born in Kuldiga and the old town seemed to me to be unchanged from his descriptions.

Lithuania is flatter, and Estonia even more full of pine trees.
