I’m planning the fine details of my trip to the Alps in March.
I have discovered the limits for baggage on the regular Eurostar (London – Paris) are that:
"When you travel with Eurostar, you don’t usually need to check your luggage in. Each passenger can take up to 2 medium-sized items (85cm at their maximum length) with them on board, plus 1 small item of hand luggage. What’s more, provided none of your items are longer than 85cm at their longest length, there aren’t any weight restrictions. Of course, we do still need to make sure there is enough room for everybody’s bags, so if you bring more than the allowance mentioned above, you may need to pay an excess luggage charge of £15 per item."
I’m taking my ski poles, which are 120cm and I want to take my cricket bag, which is just 85cm when you don’t fill the front pouch.
What advice do you have?
As the policy is if you have bags sized over the limit they will send the items on a train in following 24 hours. I’m assuming this policy is if the train is packed. This isn’t practical as 1 hour 30 mins after arriving in Paris I’m catching a connection.
What do you think the answer to these question will be?
Can I take my poles as hand luggage? i.e just carry them in my hands
Should I leave my poles in my bag, which makes the item large than 85 cm?
If they query the size, can you argue if you only have one bag instead of having two bags?
I could ditch the cricket bag and take two suitcases, but how would I take my poles?
Or are they relatively relaxed unless the train is packed with luggage?
I will be giving them a wring at some point.

Im 101% sure you will have no trouble with 120cm ski poles.
I took a mountain bike in a bag 120X80X30cms on eurostar in August.
As long as it gets through the metal detector and you can lift it off the ground you will be fine.
It is a free-for-all on the luggage racks especially on the ski trains. Ski poles can fit in the overhead bit fine.
Ive done the eurostar a few times last year (not ski train) with a board bag (170cm) Not a blink from anyone.
Phone them to be sure.

abc, Essentially I will some day in the near future buy a pair of skis. I found a cheap pair of qood quality pair of last years poles for half price and saw it as an invest for the future. Now I have brought them I think it would be silly not to use them.

First time on the eurostar, which times are normally the busiest at the weekend? Are they ever rammed?

Though if you're still going to be hiring skis anyway, I suspect you might be able to get poles for not much extra...

Can't you get rubber feet for the poles and say they're a mobility aid, i.e. walking sticks?

That's all you need to know. Leave them behind, poles are always included in the price of ski hire.
