Poster: A snowHead

I'm going to Banff on January 20th for 10 days. How cold can I expect it to be, i.e is it generally colder than European resorts for this time of year?
Cheers

Can get very cold at that time of year and I would plan for it to be a fair bit colder than europe (higher altitudes, further north etc). -20 and colder can be pretty common but there's loads of good skiing and you'll have a blast.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'll probably bump into you BOD, I'll be there 16-23rd. I've been before. It could get cold, but could well be just like the alps. Just ensure you have a thermal kit in your luggage just in case, i.e. long johns, vest, glove liners, sock liners, balaclava/face mask. It probably won't be necessary, but you never know, could be a cold snap, and it can freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Incidentally BOD, you don't live near Smarden or Headcorn do you?

I find -10 in the Bow Valley isn't comparable to the similar temperatures I have experienced in Europe. It could get down to around 40 below.

We had -42 but as the liftie said "we don't open until it get's to a spring like -25".

Actually lower than most French Resorts but colder all the same at that time of year. However not always. I went for New Year 2005/6 and i don't think it got below about -20C.(by comparison it was nearly -30C in Zermatt at the top last February).

I’m not involved in the creation of the snow report, but I think it’s safe to assume that “all lifts open” means there are runs open from each lift. If delayed openings are weather related, the status could change at any time. In the past we’ve had to close the three alpine lifts (Top of the World, Summit, and Paradise) for part of the day due to extreme winds. While we had expected the wind to come in some shape or form, you never know exactly what will happen or when (or if) until it actually happens, and the same is true of cold. The thermometer may say -30C, which is a borderline open/close temperature, but any sort of wind or a little bit of sun can easily push it either way, making a day that’s somewhat bearable or one where we only open one lift. |

We live in Calgary and ski all winter with our two little kids. We generally stop skiing with them around -25. We lose very few skiing days because of the cold- but we don't ski that much at Lake Louise which or Sunshine, which are the coldest. At school they play out at recess at -20 or warmer.
I would say the most important thing is to cover all exposed skin. Frostbite becomes a serious issue at -27C or colder and this includes the wind chill , so frostbite is a risk on days above -25C when there is a wind. My saying frostbite is a risk isn't me being wimpy , its a fact. At -27C I read last year that a healthy Canadian has 5 to 10mins at these temps beofre getting frostbite- this was from a clinical trial in a freezer, when they stoped it after peoples skin turned white and froze, which is the inital sign.
So I am saying the cold is fine if you take it seriously, are prepared for it and cover exposed skin.
The thing about the Rockies is that it can do anything, so be prepared for daytime temsp of -30C to +5C. Nighttime lower.
Have fun!
