Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi, we (mum and 3 teenage boys) are coming to Banff for Christmas and are looking for some advice for somewhere cool and trendy to go for Chrissie Day, looking for dinner and a bit of partying perhaps.
Whats on and whats the best place to go?
Also are the ski runs open on Chrissie Day?
Any info or previous experience would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chezzi

Hi, went there last year for new year and it was awesome, not sure about crimbo but last new year most places were booked up dinner wise well in advance. There are some great restaurants all up the main street and the food is pretty good out there. If you try banff tourism website and email some of the places or even the tourist office they should help. very friendly people and great snow!
All resorts are bus linked but it pays to get the earliest ones each morning as 40 mins on the way to lake louise, 20 or so to sunshine.

Saltlik's a good one.
Last time I went, had christmas brunch at Banff Springs which was awesome - not trendy and not clever but could not move for the rest of the day due to the sheer weight of food and drink consumed.
Deffo book as early as possible as its a busy time.
Certainly are slopes open on Chrimbo day - went to Sunshine two years back and Santa came out to play as well, though I'm not sure it was THE Santa.

If you "know Banff very well" why don't you know where to eat?

Well not having been there for Christmas before, dont really know what is on offer, and was just looking for some recommendations from anyone who may have been there for Christmas before. We have never been away over Christmas and want to still enjoy something of the celebrations.

Is Christmas in Canada like Christmas in the States? Only spent one Christmas there - in Colorado (not a ski resort) in about 1970. It was all very low key, everyone back to work on 26th December (I tried to explain about Boxing Day - sleeping it off - cold turkey, chips and pickles, etc etc etc but it fell on deaf ears).

pam w, Lots of calgarians take a whole week off as lots of offices shut. Think Boxing Day is a stat holiday in Alberta, but like UK the shops will open for sales that day.
Canadians (on the whole) have better holiday rights and a less ridiculous work ethic than US
How about Christmas at The Bison, Coyotes (or something like that) or for a more lively meal The Magpie and Stump?

reminds me of a comment made at a party I was at last weekend - someone said "In this country, if someone asks what you do, you say "I'm a pharmacist" or "I'm an electrician" or whatever. In Canada they say "I do a lot of fishing" or something on those lines.

pam w,
Its because they have very little class system and what you do for a job , in most circles , doesn't matter that much to most people- its not what defines you. You are more defined by how you spend your time. Its fairly refreshing.
