Hello Everyone! My first post, so please bear with me. We've been offerred free accommodation in Megeve 11-16 December. Although some of the resort lifts will be open, I was wondering if snowheads can suggest any nearby snowsure places to ski, in case it's a bit thin in Megeve itself. We shall have a car with us. Many thanks.

Les Contamines may be a good bet. I know you can get a bus from St Gervais , probably Megeve also if you don`t have a car. Chams not far!

Flaine should be partially open and Les Contamines might be open on the weekend you're there. Both will have more snow than Megeve. You can ski Les Contamines on the same lift pass as Megeve. Anyway - I'd leave it until the last minute to buy a pass so you can be more confident of the conditions.

It's about 30-40 minutes to Argentiere. Grands Montets is certainly high enough for snow - it would just depend on how much there has been, as it is rockier than Megeve.

Les Contamines (would be my personal choice), Les Saisies, Flaine (a bit longer, but a bit surer I would think).

Depends on how the weather's come in (and whether it comes in - if it carries on as warm as it is now, even the grand montet's not going to be looking very white. Les Saisies is partially open that week (depending on snow) but I doubt it'll have any more snow than the top of Megeve. Nearer the time you'll be able to make a better judgement.
But if it's free - go for it. Just don't buy any lift passes in advance.

You may well be right about Argentiere but from the link to the Les Contamines site I gave above

I think that's usually true, but you can be restricted to Côte 2000 at Megève, which isn't beginner territory - so the choice would depend on the nature of the group.

yes, Les Saisies might be the nearest choice for gentle skiing. The top of Les Contamines is mostly long, cruisy, reds - the more beginnerish skiing is a bit lower down.
Les Saisies will have limited runs open too - but the main skiing on Bisanne will probably be open if anything is, and is mostly gentle.

Hello and thanks for all the suggestions. We won't book any lift passes in advance and as we are driving to free accommodation we can be flexible where to ski, or even whether to go! We are not beginners, but we like cruisey blues/reds. Blacks create too much marital stress! We've never been to this area before although we have skiied out the Three Valleys and La Plagne. Thanks again!

noodle, if you do a search for "jivebaby" he's organising a couple fo days in and around Morzine and Flaine whilst you're out so might be worth joining up.
