in garbure we trust good pics. I was wondering, would Baqueira be experiencing similar conditions as it's only 70km away? Thinking of giving Baqueira a go in mid Jan to try something different.
Anyone been there recently other than David Beckham? Or does he post on here?
Most recent comment I can find was Nov 07 http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=31424&highlight=baqueira

WayneC, Would likely be similar over that side I think. But the N side of Pyrenees copped a bit more. We had the TV crews in the village for the local news due to the amounts, I even got interviewed cheaky bug even had a go at my accent. Why Baqueira rather than one of the French resorts though? It is alot more expensive there.

DallyPaul, It is a local soup, but yes in the Occitan style language they use here (Bareges valley use to be cut off and only accessed over the Tourmalet Col - of Tour de France fame - in the summer, so they have kept their old language). "Ke bon y bat" for example means "its snowing" and "ha nee gat" means as pissed as a fart handy stuff. I have put a recipe for Garbure on the recipe post if you want to taste it...

el nombre, I was going for the asthetic.... Did you ever see the "snake" and "arrow"? They were a couple of pisteurs working in Courchevel when I was working there... Snake would put a perfect S all the way down some crazy steep couloir, and his mate arrow would then straight line it through the middle like some devils own medi alert signal. I think arrow may have since died though...

in garbure we trust, - fantastic photos -brought back some happy memories spent three seasons in that area in the mid eighties keep on saying we should go back. Does the Hotel Igloo and Hotel Europe still exist? - by coincidence I was looking at the Pic Du Midi web cam this morning - may be that is a sign?

snowbandit, Funnily enough I own the hotel Igloo, it exists but only just - the roof leaks, mushrooms are sprouting from the floor (not even tasty ones) - and we are planning a complete strip out and rebuild to give Bareges its first ever 3/4 star hotel, hopefully in time for Christmas/Newyear 2010 or at least by Feb 2011. Hotel Europe is still here too and a rather nice chalet in the middle of the village if you were to follow my signature link (shameless I know). The hotel was recieved by the bank 4 years ago, it is like the Marie Celest in there, but now there are very big grants for durable/eco tourisme, so hopefully it will be reborn as the "Duke of Maine" - (Louis XIV's son and Madame de Maintenon use to stay there to use the spa opposite), we are just waiting on the bank to OK the very large loan. All very scary for us but I think it is something that should work well, it is an amazing area. We came for the hiking and summer sports (my wife and I are International, Mountain, Leaders), we were very naive about the skiing when we came but the first season we opened our lodge we were rammed with skiers! They have spent alot on the resort with all fast 6 man chairs and the like and what with the Pic du Midi (2877m), now being open to skiers and the world champion snowboarder coming from here, it is not hanging around.

in garbure we trust, -Thankyou for the information , I will start to make some enquiries re flights etc - I will also be watching the web cams on the lead up to the start of the season. As you say it is an amazing area and not widely known to the British market. Good luck with your venture.

They are a bit worn but there were two snow heads stickers on my helmet, could that be the first outing on French TV for snowhead advert...?
Thinking a bit about it, not bad to be asked where my accent was from I suppose, rather than just assuming I am english, I must admit though that I was rolling my eyes about all over the place trying to string together the right words

WayneC, we've been to Baquiera with Ski Miquel, they're a good bunch and the chalet hotel is excellent. Don;t go for the "small double" as it really is tiny....
in garbure we trust, One day I'll have enough money to come out and stay, I used to live in Pau and never skiied, I'm kicking myself now. Closest we got was going walking up amongst the lakes

nbt, The lakes a very, very pretty though I came here originally for the summer hiking, we had no idea it was also home to the largest ski resort in the French Pyrenees, we thought "hmm would be nice to be quite high, maybe we will do the odd snow shoeing trip..." Bit stoopid I know, but the snowshoeing is doing ok
WayneC, I met the Ski Miquel guys at the ski show in London, they seemed a very nice bunch, and their chalet looked stunning. They use to opperate here too and are probably coming back next year (they started in Bareges and Baquiera as two partners and the orriginal partners son now fancies getting back into Bareges, there are no opperators here at the mo so could be good for the village, they have a bit more of an advertising budget than I do!).

bobinch, Just go and do it, I would reccomend somewhere like the Pyrenees to start out with (if you would want to make an all year thing of it), as it has two proper seasons and relatively (to be in resort is still pricey), cheap property. It is known for its summer stuff (pretty villages, Tour de France, National Parks, wild bears, loads of flowers, birds - the feathered kind etc...), by the hikers and cyclists. Then you have some nice ski resorts for the winter (Tourmalet, Luz Ardiden, Gavarnie, St Lary, Gourette, Cauterets, Piau Engaly, Bagneres de Luchon, Peyragude, Les Angles...). If you want to there is even stuff between summer and winter seasons should you be based in a thermal spa resort. The French version of the NHS send loads of people on the "cure" and they want some where to stay 3 weeks at a time in the off-season (for cheap as chips, but can be handy). I would be happy to help any snowhead wanting to know how to run a french business.
