Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi folks.
Each January for 2 nights away/3 days skiing my mate and I get away to Geneva and on to the Porte de Soleil. After 3 years running we fancy a change of resort/domain, and please note flights are booked and paid for. Criteria as follows:
1-1.5 hour transfer max. Dont want to drive but instead use a service so want that to be cost effective too.
As snow sure as is possible.
Good intermediate skiing.
Country not important.
We will be needing accomodation Sunday and Monday nights only so need somewhere that will play ball on short stays, HB okay but prefer B&B.
If you have any accomodation tips as per above please do let me know.
Many thanks in advance
PL

Les Carroz - 52 mins by local taxi @ 250 Euros return (eg. Irene Martin). Quite a few Enlish run Chalets in Les Carroz, some I am sure will do short breaks, they can also sort transport out for you and they will probably add to this thread soon. 1200m base station with snowmaking that web-site "guarantees" ski return to village all season. Easy and fairly quick access to 265 km Grand Massif circuit (eg. 40 mins ski to Flaine). Circuit suits me as a 25 year holiday skier, so we bought studio here. Good luck.

Would agree, the Grand Massif is the obvious other contender (in France at any rate) for a big area near Geneva where it's convenient to go without a car. Not necessarily Les Carroz. If you've limited time, Flaine might be more convenient, if less attractive.

Peter Leuzzi, Chamonix? specifically accomodation within walking distance of the Brevent or Flegere uplift (e.g. Hotels Rhodedendron, Labrador or Eden in Cham Les Praz. Or Argentiere.
Flegere-Brevent plenty of skiing for intermediates 2-3 days (in Chamonix much more, for instance, than Champoluc, wuold suggest Brevent-Flegere on its own better than Champoluc).
Les Houches also worth a look and with better on snow dining.
(Edited after thinking a little harder).

Peter Leuzzi, you could try La Clusaz about an hour from Geneva Skiweekender do an all in package or the Grand Massif we used Sixt Alpine Chalet, for a short break, there are a few snowheads who operate in the the area K&M Chalets is one though not used them myself.

You can take the train to Verbier. Takes 2.5 hours/ish. Is very easy.

Peter Leuzzi, choices within 1-1.5hrs from Geneva for short breaks is reasonably limited but we found short breaks available to Flaine, La Clusaz/Le Grand Bornard (actually came close to booking but skimidweeker instead), Chamonix also Leysin and Les Diablerets in Switzerland (trickier for short stay accomm).
We're off to Morzine

Peter Leuzzi, A group of us had a long weekend with this crowd http://www.gravite.co.uk/ in La Clusaz a couple of years ago. A bit out of town but they would run you to the lifts in the morning and pick you up in the evening. Recommended.

Hi Peter
We went away for a long weekend in Courmayeur last January with Interski (booked own Easyjet flights to Geneva and they picked us up from the airport). this was a prelude to our main trip in March to Finland.
We enjoyed it so much we're doing it all over again this year, 4 night trip to Courmayeur in early Jan and then back to Finland for a week late Feb/early March.
Courmayeur doesn't have a huge ski area, but enough for a long weekend for intermediates and of course the ski pass gets you all round the other piste areas of Aosta valley too if you fancy catching a bus for some variety.....

Les Contamines... on the way to chamonix, then turn right at Le Fayet. Marvellous, uncrowded resort with loads of off-piste as well as pisted runs, around a snowbowl.
