Thanks to the IDE snowmaker, Pitztal opens the season this Saturday. The runs close to the Panoramabahn between 3020-3440m are in operation.

It appears that heavy snow is forecast for the ski amade area beginning the 12th October. In Schladming this is down to valley level and is set to continue for a few days at least, and hopefully beyond! Some people are forecast around a foot of snow and nearly that much in the valley! Unfortunately because Schladming is in the constrcution of their new 8 man lift i am not sure that we will see any super early openings unless they finish it extremely quickly.

Wouldn't expect any snow to stay sub 1500m but it will mean that the glaciers will start to increase their base.

As others have reported, it is snowing in the Austrian Alps and more is forecast for the rest of the week. Here is a picture of the Wilder Kaiser with a first sprinkling of snow, as seen from Kössen.

Hi,
The first snow has arrived today.Yet last week the temp was over 25oC!!
I don't think it will stay on the ground for long since it is wet underneath and we haven't tidied the garden up yet or put our snow tyres on.
This is the earliest for snow in the village for the 5 seasons we have been here.
The web cam is now on,

Have nothing useful to add but am too excited about early snow to not post anything! I know it will all melt, but actually, I don't care, there is nothing like white webcams to brighten up my day...

Way more of it eastwards of central Switzerland which rather surprises me as the cold airstream causing this moved from west to east initially.
I love the Sat24 satellite pictures and have them running in the background all day on my laptop! It makes the Met Office static pressure maps come to life - but I'm a bit of a weather geek, so I'm easily pleased!

Snowguns are working now in Schladming. They are planning to open soon. Reiteralm claims to be the next resort to open.

So where are Austrias top early resorts going to be this year? St Anton? Oburgurgl? Really want to get out there before christmas

waynos that is exactly what i was thinking from looking at the forecast yesterday! I seem to recall them saying that it was the first october opening for 25 years but it would be great to have another October opening! I am going to schladming in January again this year so i hope the conditions are great and a good snowbase is present from early on.
