Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Car Rentals/Snow Tires

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hello.....

Newbie here....
Question for all you seasoned Euro skiers! We are flying into Munich, and were curious if car rentals are equipped with Winter Tires or at least chains. We are driving into Austria, and would like them, however I am not sure if they are standard, or if they must be requested.

Thanks to all!

As far as I know, in Munich neither winter tyres nor chains will come as standard unless requested / specified in the booking. If you booked an SUV, it may have winter tyres - you'd still need to check.

I believe it's only Switzerland where rental cars must come with winter tyres.

There is a long-running debate on this site on whether Austrian law absolutely requires winter tyres or not. I can't remember what the answer is, but unless I was sure of the legal situation AND knew the road well, I would prefer to have them. Well I'd prefer to have them anyway. (not that anyone ever checked my tyres, either on my rental or my own car).

Welcome to snowheads.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

THanks....I do believe that rentals in Austria are with smow tires - my husband who is Austria thought that was the case. However, since we are flying into MUC this time, we weren't sure.

Thanks again!

I am almost sure that it is now a legal requirement to have snow tyres in Austria from last winter. We ski in Austria every year (usually flying into Munich) and last winter was the first time we started hearing about fines and even jail time!!! No car hire company we have ever used from Munich has given us snow tyres as standard so I am pretty sure you will need to request them. From what I can remember they are only about €40 but seeing as himself does the driving and the booking of cars I could be a bit off there. We have never had much trouble en route to any of the resorts in Austria, Autobahn most of the way, but they are definitely useful in the resorts themselves.
