Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi all, so I've only ever been to the Alpes in March & February before, never ventured this side of Christmas although always wanted to for some reason.
Considering heading out in December, round the 13th or something, looking at the usual spots like Val Thorens and Alpe D'Huez....so my question is "what kind of snow conditions can be expected before Christmas"? Generally, not asking anyone to predict it in October! Is December very much hit and miss or is it generally "a good time to go"?
Thanks very much

I went to VT in November once and the snow was wicked! But, as you said can be hit and miss. Best thing to do at that time of year is book a few days before you go so you know what the conditions are going to be like. VT is high so always a good chance it'll be fine. Aple D'Huez (resort) isn't so high but, has some high runs, I think the top is something like 3300m.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Matt_C, welcome to Snowheads. Tignes might be a better bet than either of the others - but as mcboz says, wait and book at the very last minute.

Matt_C,
It really does depend on the weather, I have had some brilliant weeks at the beginning of December in both Tignes and Alpe d'Huez. There are normally very few people about as well but the downside is it can be very, very cold especially in Tignes, -15 all day with no sun is pretty cold.

Whitegold, the Oisans was covered in squeaky powdery snow in early December last season, no ice to be found.
