Unfortunately yesterday JulesB was injured in an accident on the piste in Serre Chevalier and broke his neck.
He managed to ski down the piste after the accident, and then drive from the resort doctors to the hospital in Briancon.
He was transferred from the local hospital in Briancon to the local neurosurgical specialist centre in Grenoble where he had an operation to fix it today. He's now back on the ward, and apparently the early signs are good, he was complaining that they weren't giving him enough drugs.
I'm sure all our thoughts go out to him, Helen and his sons and wish him a speedy recovery.
Just thought that everyone who knows them would probably want to know.

Kramer you may be a doctor but most of us aren't - what is a displaced fracture to a C6 vertebra when it's at home?
Sounds like a broken back or neck to me without looking it up....

Get well soon JulesB. Hope all works out well and you're back skiing soon.
I've spent a night in Briancon hospital after falling down the stairs in the Underground Bar (gone but not forgotten, I can still trace the scars many years later!). If you got transferred before you got fed then you didn't miss anything.

Oooh, nasty. Healing karma and all that. Look on the bright side, one of the chaps coming to Utah with us broke his neck in a skiing accident a few years back, and he's a better skiier than I am!

Who is that top UK female competition skier who has fused vertebrae from an earlier broken neck? When competing she carries an x-ray and medical notes in case of future accidents just in case medics confuse the DX.

Indeed. I remember quite clearly how it felt when my daughter broke her back in a Sealed Knot battle re-enactment.
But she has made as full a recovery as possible with two crushed vertebrae, and has born two children since. Her back will never be "right" as muscles have to do some of the work that the spine should be doing, but she can do pretty well everything normally.
I hope the outcome is as good for Jules.
