Poster: A snowHead

I'm planning a 28 night holiday to the US next winter. I've got an annual policy with Direct Travel and this limits me to 17 days skiing per holiday. Is there a company that specialises in longer trips? (I've had a quote from Direct Travel which seemed expensive - I won't state it here because I want to check the details I gave them).

rich.ll, who will know if you ski more than 17 days ? i had a chat with the man selling insurance etc at the PO and he basically said this type of insurance is based on trust and the limit to the timescales were really intended to stop people 'doing a season' on such insurance

rayscoops,Direct Travel ask for proof of your travel dates, accommodation and lift pass receipts etc if you make a claim . However, our passes were season passes as it was cheaper to buy one of those for our planned trips last winter than it was to buy weekly passes. As there wasn't 17 days between our outbound and return eurotunnel trips, they didn't query it, but I wonder if they would have done were they 20 or 21 days apart. I don't think I would like to take the risk of having to prove I had been skiing for only 16 days if my accident happened on day 22 and I had no proof that I hadn't been skiing at the start of the holiday. They insure for up to 45 days per trip if the trip is not a ski trip.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

rayscoops, I'll be getting a season liftpass so that might make the insurance company suspicious. On top of that I expect there might well be computer records of the lifts I use. Also I won't feel very clever saving tens of pounds and having to pick up a multi thousand pound medical bill.

the man at the PO is dangerously wrong... it might be kind of true where someone flits in and out on numerous trips but, in the OP's case, it would seriously backfire. In any claim situation, let alone an expensive accident, the claims handler will look very closely at evidence of travel. They'll want to see airline/ferry/ tour op reservations etc etc. They will be looking for dates. Best assume that they will know, beyond much doubt, how many days skiing you are likely to have done.

and, moreover, if there is any discrepancy between what your travel documentation shows, and how many days you say you've been skiing, the onus of proof will be on you. rich.ll is right, it would be madness to save a few bob on insurance when skiing in one of the places where getting mended is particularly expenses.

When we had the same issue we went to our insurance provider ans gave them the exact dates we would be skiing, one trip was for one week and one for 6 weeks in the US. I think we were already covered for 21 days , so then they just gave us a price for the extra days. It probably wasn't the cheapest way of doing it but at least we felt comfortable that we were covered. Luckily we didn't need it.
