Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

i was wondering what the purpose the carve plate serves and is it necessary

jrock, welcome to snowHeads, the carve plate lifts your ski boots so that when carving at an extreme angle your boots do not touch the snow.

By adding height it gives a greater leverage effect as well, hence more pressure/power exerted on the edges when carving.... (in racing for example, the carve plate is strictly limited to a maximum thickness).

jrock5080, Welcome....Mr HH had a something similar fitted to his last pair of Atomic skis (an integral part of the binding set up). Beware, he could never fit his feet onto the chair lift supports without crushing his knees on the bar, always had to ride with his legs dangling!!
