Hi all, am new to Snowheads, nice to see adaptive skiing so well talked about.
Anyway I will get to the point, I usually ski in Breck with my 3 mono ski friends, which is great, because you can get Buddies at $80 a day.
However, this year we cannot make it there, so are looking at Europe, what a challenge! Have spent months now trying to find somewhere to stay, ie suitable accomodation and non- instruction, the Mono skiers are superb skiers, just need support of a buddy for lifts, in case they fall in the pit, they are almost self loading.
We have looked at all the usually places Tignes, La plagne and Avorias, no buddies; you may be wondering why i can't do it, well I ski with one of my friends, but cannot ski with 3 and they are a whole lot faster than me, i am a bit of a cruiser. We were just wondering, it's a long shot, whether anyone knows about suitable ski resorts, accomodation and Buddies who would like to make a few bucks. Mono friends have been skiing for 10 + years.

Mono Gal, welcome to Snowheads! Can't answer your questions myself but there are several adaptive instructors who post on here who may be able to point you in the right direction. You could also try contacting DSUK and see if they can give any info.

Mono Gal, check out the thread by donzo (IIRC) who wanted to take his wheelchair bound son to Italy with the family for a ski holiday. Struck out with UK organisations who wanted him to go with their camps... In the end we sorted sitski rental etc in Livigno through the Italian disabled group...
I would think the same guy could help with guides(buddies) for your friends...

Enjoy have fun - It seems donzo did well with Livigno - Lorenzo told me it is a centre for disabled skiing and Alllessandro said something similar... I would think that was a good possible location

Mono Gal, I've heard good things about Les Arcs from a couple of monoskiing friends who went there last year, I think they said accessibility (for monoskiers) was good... This post from me is a little premature as I don't actually have any facts or real information to give you, other than to tell you I'll ask around and get back to you.
So far in Europe, from what I've seen, there hasn't been much of a market for "Buddies" like they have in the US. The demand simply isn't there, yet. Monoskiers either have lessons or they have able bodied friends that they ski with.
If your monoskiing friends don't want/need instruction and they are pretty much independent, apart from the inevitable "in the pit" problems! Why not try asking on here if anyone is interested to join you... Obviously, best would be someone who knows something about monoskiing, but if your friends are as experienced as you say they are, then they should be able to tell an inexperienced buddy what help they need.

SaraJ, In Oz they are not "marketed" - guides are volunteers who are trained to assist... DWA runs guide courses regularly...
I think the USA thing is because of the way they are structured with sep ski schools...
We are integrated into regular ski school system and there is much more expectation that we will ski on our own or with "normal" people in a regular manner.. I have seen disabled kids with a regular ski school group...
We are also set up so that each disabled skier with a "guide required" in their passport(disabled ID) is entitled to a free ticket for their guide...

Hi all, what a fab forum, did not expect so many replies so soon, and all really positive info.
We are going to check out some of the info listed here, maybe there's hope, a European ski vacation may happen next year after all, all sounds good.
We are going to take a trip to Aviemore in Feb, hopefully get in some skiing, weather up here is nice and cold. Will hopefully hook up and chat to some of the Adaptive team up there.
Les Arcs sounds hopeful, we checked that out about five years ago and it was problematic with regard to accessibility at that time, maybe it has developed since then.
Really appreciate all info and if any of you guys need info about Colorado, just ask.

Hey, drop me a line if you are thinking of coming out to France. I've worked with programmes in the US and Scotland and will be based near La Clusaz this winter 2009-2010 (about 30 minutes from Geneva). I've been involved in various disability sports programmes and should be available late Dec, Jan and March this winter. Let's hope we get some early snow - kinda warm here in the Alps at the mo!!! Another venue with potential is La Plagne. I'm sorry I don't have any detailed info but the area between La Roche and Aim2000 is often really busy with all sorts of adaptive ski instruction going on and there are definitely dedicated resources based there.
I get the impression though that the options presented here tend to be either go with a friend/club or hire trained instructors, whereas your friends don't need instruction/care beyond a bit of backup now and then.
What degree of specialised skill is required? If it's just a case of finding someone dependable who wants a subsidised trip in return for providing support to some 'new mates on monos', I'd have thought you would find plenty of takers around here.

I am not completely up to date with what they are up to this year but our local resort is classififed as a handy ski resort (the pisteurs help with getting on and off the lifts and slow them down for hanyskiers if they need it). I see alot of monos flying about and the current French olympic handy ski champion is from our ski resort, she is hard to see though - one leg or not she shifts! Anyway the resort is Grandtourmalet (Bareges/La Mongie) in the French Pyrenees (the largest/highest resort in this region). Hi all, thanks for all the info, unfortunately we have decided to give Europe a miss this year, we are off to ski Telluride and Breckenridge at the end of January, it may be a bad choice on reflection as the snow fall does not look good at the moment, should have stayed in Scotland, lol. We definately want to find a European destination for 2011, so keep the information coming, it is really useful.
Will check out Grandtourmalet and other ideas suggested, it may be an idea to subsidise another skiier, will keep that in mind for 2011.
