Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anybody Run a Ski Shop?

I am thinking about setting up a business and was wondering if anyone had any experience in the retailing of ski's. If so, can I pick your brains.

Thanks

Freeze-Thawts, Seriously, I wouldn't be setting up a business retailing anything in this climate. Your chances of success are slim to non existent.
Sorry to be negative, but retailing is a non-starter in this economy unless you have very deep pockets and can provide something different to the competition.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Freeze-Thawts, skis are only in stores to make it look like a ski shop - margin on skis isn't great and the profit stays on the rack at the end of the season. The money is in the soft goods and the servicing. A pizza parlour is a much better bet.

Thanks all for your comments. Sobering to say the least.

I actually have something a little less obvious that an out and out ski shop....but its just anm idea.

Out of interest - if I bought many sets of say Rossignol Bandits from Rossignol direct, roughtly what price per set could I get them for? And what do they retail for in a standard ski shop?

Freeze-Thawts, You are joking surely? if you need to ask those questions here - I am not sure you should be trying to get into that business.

10 seconds with a search question would answer the second question. Bode Swiller knows his stuff on this one I believe.

Freeze-Thawts, If your other Rossi post is serious I'm not sure that trying to make good margin on obsolete stock is the best idea. My understanding was that Rossi were choosing to destroy most of the considerable stockpile of unsold skis in preference to destroying the market for their product for ever by dumping huge quantities of discount product.

stoatsbrother, I asked a simple question intended for people running ski shops ie what do you buy them for and what do you sell them for. Yes, I can search what skis sell for for a punter, but all I am trying to ascertain is what margin a retailer might work off with the sale of ski's.

fatbob, not my intention, no. That is seperate matter altogether.

Freeze-Thawts, To get margins and trade cost prices your first step is to contact the agents/distributors. You would need to explain your business idea/plans etc.

Trade prices are the not sort of things that would be published on forums. You can easily search the net for contact details of the distributors/agents although this may help http://www.slideuk.co.uk/.

Freeze-Thawts, Your second question was the price that people sell them for in shops - the answer to which is.... available by asking in a shop... or going into one... or looking on the internet. Ok?

As for you plans to get them direct from Rossignol - does this plan involve a brick, a transit and a getaway driver?

Freeze-Thawts, first thing...is your business idea bricks and mortor or internet based, most suppliers will not supply internet only businesses....honest answer margins on skis are not good, as others have said the margin normally sits on the rack at the end of the season and you hope and pray that you can shift what is there

i would be looking at something a little more service orientated than a pure retail outlet per-say, give it 18months and i may be offering a workable franchise in the south wink

ok so you have a bricks and mortor business..you then need to get the suppliers to supply you...not as simple as you think, for one orders are placed in febuary/march for delivery in september (if the supplier shipps on time) i tried to order something as a special the other day, once the laughter at the end of the phone died down, (this is a guy i do a lot of business with) i was rtold that the earliest i could expect delivery would be DECEMBER...so a little late for the coming season

in all seriousness if you want to ask more questions give me a call, the office number is on the website in the link below
