I all, I have had my all my skiing for this year, or thought I had, but a skiing mate has just suggested we try to get a very late trip in, starting on May 9th for a week in europe.
Typical he can't get the week off before when a few of the resorts are still open.
So it's over to the Snowheads here, any thoughts as to skiing after most resorts are closed?
Hintertux Glacier? Kaprun Glacier? or where.
Has anyone done summer skiing on one of the glaciers in europe? If so was it worth doing.
Thanks all.

Was in Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) May bank holiday last year, whole of the ski area was open and powder snow up top, well worth the trip, skiing 5 days. Summer skiing is probably most enjoyed by park skiers/boarders.

I have skied on the Zermatt glacier in summer, and although you ask for a more spectacular locationan noan it wasnakt worth cost (unless I suppose you are doing some specialist training). OK for a morning if you've money to burn, that's all.

If I had a spare week in May I'd be planning a road trip of Austria, using the following recipe:-
- Take a cheap flight to Munich, Salzburg, Friedrichshafen or Zurich
- Hire a car
- Drive to any number of the following glaciers - two or three would be a great combo and all are worth a couple of days visit (or more):-
- Hintertux
- Kaprun
- Solden
- Stubai
- Pitztal
At that time of the year there would be no need to book accommodation and in the villages near the glaciers you can find quality B n B for about €25 pp per night. Just turn up and knock on doors. (Or contact the tourist office in advance if you are concerned).
The glaciers are generally located in valleys that run perpendicular to the main east-west motorway that runs through Austria and you can get from one glacier to another in about 1.5 hours if you plan things well. In the past we've skiied all day then driven on to the next place on our list, finding accommodation on arrival.
If you fly to Munich you could also try the glacier in Garmisch, which is only about 70km south of Munich. Best to check if it's open then though...
Early May will see you having some great snow conditions and you won't regret the trip. You know it makes sense!

I've skied Hintertux which was fantastic. I did some serious research before we went and it seemed to be the largest of most, decent snow conditions and lot's of lifts. We did it for 3 days and there was enough there to keep us entertained.

The Hintertux is No1 on my list, but the suggestion of trying a few glaciers in one trip sounds good.
Watch this space and see details of where and when we will be there, anyone else how fancies the galciers, I'm happy to meet there.

wilkybob, I've just returned from a week of great skiing in Sölden. Easter was a little busy, but then it tailed off to only a handful of people on the slopes. The big benefit that Sölden has is the glacier skiing. At this time of year the snow on the lower slopes is icy in the morning, which has a very small window (and hour or so mid morning) when it is good before it turns lumpy, cruddy and wet. But if you take a couple more lifts up to the glaciers it is excellent all of the day. Whilst I was there no new snow fell, however, I was told that the day after 30cm of new powder snow fell on the glacier.
I am reliably informed that you can ski the glaciers all year round, but in the summer months it is very limited to only a couple of hours in the morning. At the time you are looking to go I am 100% positive there will be plenty of snow on the glacier, may be even on the lower slopes (although it is melting on the lower slopes due to the blue skies and sunshine they are having at the moment).
If you are looking for accommodation I can highly recommend Appartmenthaus Kathrin http://www.jaqueline-soelden.at/. As the name suggests it is an appartment hotel in a great location for Sölden and the slopes. It's run by a friend of mine, Kathrin Wilhelm, a Sölden girl through and through who used to race in the Austrian World Cup Team. Perhaps I am a little biased but it is a super place to stay, very new and modern, reasonable prices and popular, although I don't think you'll have a problem booking at this time of the year. If I tell you that the USA Ski Team, Lindsey Vonn & Co, usually stay there for the first race of the World Cup series at the end of October, you'll understand that it's not a rubbish place to stay
Drop me a line if you need any help if you decide Sölden is the place for you

Knowing John Crawford as I do, I am somewhat surprised at his schoolboy error in omittting Kaunertal glacier from the list. It is located in striking distance of Solden & Pitztal & is worth a look for a day.

I skied Les Deux Alpes last summer. Busy but not too busy. All the runs are pretty easy. You have to be up on top early or you'll be skiing in soup. Young Italians very annoyingly pushy in the queue for the T bar. I can recommend the Chalet Mounier for accommodation but even more for the excellent food; good value if you go half board.
However, does anyone have any experience of Zermatt late May early June. I'm told the runs are very limited but I can't get the Zermatt Tourist Info to respond to my enquiries.

psw, forget it. Summer skiing is for suckers/addcits/nutters. 45 minutes in a cable car for 2 slushy green runs between 1000 beginners. save your money, or go to New Zealand
