I was recommended a pair of longish Scott Missions for use in the soft, almost slushy, snow in Tignes/Vd'I last week; the combination of the soft snow and my considerable weight led to the recommendation. Despite my misgivings, I found them excellent and really enjoyed skiing on them; they were pretty good on the ice/very hard snow as well as in the slush. However, I gather that they are an 'all mountain' ski, and may therefore not be ideal for me, a 95%+ on piste skier, in 'normal' piste conditions.
Based on that, any suggestions as to what skis I would enjoy in 'normal' piste conditions? I don't own skis, but I can never remember what I've hired. I'm pretty sure that I enjoyed a pair of Salomon X wing 8s earlier this season. I tend to prefer skis which turn easily, as I'm a lazy sod, and speed is not of the essence.

richmond, The scott aztec pro would be the piste oriented version of the Mission and The Scott RC even more piste oriented. The x-wing tornados would be a few steps up from the x wing 8. Built on wood cores and much more lively but not as agressive as the Tornado Ti.

richmond, Not that I can offer you any advice, but do you have to have a "piste ski"? If you really enjoyed these skis and they are "all mountain" what is wrong with investing in a pair? That way if you did feel inclined to go off piste they would also be suitable.
As I said I can't offer you any advice but I ski on piste most of the time too and my skis certainly aren't piste orientated but they turn easily and good in all conditions.

jezzy, that occurred to me too. However, I'm not especially keen on buying, as I ski for only 1/2 weeks a year and I'm far from convinced that the captial cost, running costs and buggeration factor justify a purchase. Scott skis don't seem widely available for hire in Europe, so I'm wondering what else would suit me. The Missions seemed great in the mainly soft (or very soft) snow in Tignes last week, but I don't know how they'd do on firmer pistes (although come to think of it, they were fine on the glacier, where the snow was nice and firm).

richmond, If your going to continue skiing in spring, I'd suggest the Missions were about spot on!
Out of interest how much was a weeks ski hire of the Mission? I think if you buy at sale prices then it's about cost neutral vs renting for 1/2week skier, maybe even slightly cheaper if you factor on selling them on via ebay after a few years.

kitenski, not sure about the cost; I don't think I've actually paid for them yet! What puts me off buying, as well as cost factors, is maintenance and schlepping themaround airports/railway stations. The Missions seemed spot on last week, for sure.

richmond, judging by the number of SnowHeads using Missions in the soft snow in Val Thorens this week (there were at least 5 pairs outside of the Knife and Fork one lunchtime). ., I'd say they would be perfect, and my Mission-owning hubby is nodding in agreement. Despite his desire to do more off-piste, we still ski on piste a lot of the time .

richmond, Like you, I ski mostly on piste, but love my Missions. They are such a forgiving ski with great capability in less than ideal conditions. They are better than I am on piste. What more do you want?

have you tried hiring in the UK from Edge2Edge? They have Scott Missions, Neos and various others for hire. About £90 for 6 days I think. I took Scott Neos recently and they delivered to Heathrow free. I think they do all London airports or even to you home if you want. It was a lot cheaper than the resorts and the skis were all set up for me perfectly. You just give them your boot size Din setting and they do it all for you. Came in a bag to LHR and dropped them off on my return. Perfect!
