Can anyone recommend summer skiing resorts (either in europe or states). Is it worth doing and what are the costs?

The best of the glaciers in Austria is probablby Hintertux, in Switzerland Zermatt, and in France it's probably Tignes.
Hintertux is good up to about mid July. After that you can still ski the run from the top of Gefrorene Wand to the Tuxerfernerhaus, but it tends to be old snow with blue ice. Rock hard in the morning and very soft later on 
It's such a long time since I tried it that I can't tell you what the costs are!
Frankly there are better things to do with yourself in the Alps in summer!

monotokpoint, Split your day as Above I would go with Hintertux or Zermatt. Sass Fee is not bad either. Best way to do it is with Early starts in the monring and plan to do somthing fun in the afternoon mountain biking hill walking or white water rafting.
Hopefully heading to Saas Fee myself here is hoping. There are a couple of really good courses in Tignes, Sass Fee and I think Led Deux Alps

monotokpoint, How about giving Sölden a look? - http://www.soelden.com/main/EN/SD/WI/index.html. I'm told that you can ski most (all?) of the summer months on the glaciers there as they are at 3,300m +
And if you are looking for somewhere to stay, can absolutely recommend Appartementhaus Kathrin - http://www.jaqueline-soelden.at/. Nice place, modern, good price and ideally situated for village and the slopes

monotokpoint, It's brilliant skiing in the summer! Of course the earlier you go the better the conditions. If it's good enough for people like Tomba et al, it's good enough for you and me! If all you like to clock off miles and pistes, then obviously it's not for you, but if you enjoy the act of skiing then it's a great experience. You ski in the morning and then do whatever takes your fancy in the afternoon - downhill mountain biking's very popular these days, but there's lots of choice. It's cheaper than winter and you can even camp if that's your bag. Check out my website for more info.

monotokpoint, We ski in Tignes in the Summer, usually arriving between 9/10 am to allow the crowds to go up and then after a few hours we come back down and have a nice leisurely late lunch at a lakeside restaurant. Watching the golfers across the lake on Tignes golf course, one day I'll remember to take my clubs and get a quick round in

Looks like the perfect combo! I'm more attracted to the idea of skiing in the morning and doing other activities in the afternoon the more i think about it

In terms of other (non-skiing) activities at Tignes, there is decent mountain biking - lift assisted & marked trails. Enough to put in a few afternoons after skiing anyway. Bike hire is available in resort. Hiking/walking possibilities are unlimited. There is also:
Golf, windsurfing/sailing, archery, horseriding, bmx, skateboarding, white water rafting and a leisure pool/spa.
There is usually also an international beach football tournament to watch - we met Eric Cantona (the French team manager) last year. Miserable & non-communicative just about sums it up.......
The Tour de France passed through Tignes 2 years ago - an amazing spectacle & well worth watching (and we are not road cycling fans). This year it's passing through Bourg St Maurice & Les Arcs (12/13 July-ish I think), which are easily reached from Tignes if you have a car.
The summer season - ie with all resort activities/hotels/shops and restaurants open - is July/August. The glacier is open for skiing outside those months but the resort can be a ghost town.
Tignes can be a bit pricey - 5 or 6 euros for a large beer etc. Summer skiing is about 30 euros a day but the lift pass covers you for the day - which means you can go up the lifts later on for biking or hiking. The ski pass also sometimes covers the new indoor leisure pool - but whether it does or not is a bit random. If its summer skiing you are after, I would say Austria is the place to go. Hintertux and Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) are a pretty good bet. I would have to say though there's loads of other things to do in summer in the alps. Why not try 3 valleys of Alpendorf,Wagrain,Flachau (in ski amade area) in the summer - all within easy reach of Kaprun and loads to do (Mountain Biking, rafting, golf, summer skiing...you name it you can do it).
