What actually is ‘Best of the Alps’?
Twelve classic Alpine resorts have joined forces to establish the ‘Best of the Alps’ group. Twelve resorts, all of them bearing a resounding name. All of them well known as established tourist destinations. Popular because of the way their infrastructure has evolved, their close, because of their natural relationship to the surrounding areas, the perfect mixture between established tradition and carefully nurtured progress. They comprise Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Davos, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Grindelwald, Kitzbühel, Lech Zürs am Arlberg, Megève, St. Anton am Arlberg, St. Moritz, Seefeld and Zermatt. They represent the most prestigious winter sports and summer holiday destinations in the Big Five of Europe's Alpine countries. What's more, they are market leaders in the fields of holidays and leisure, with all of them holding out the guarantee of top quality. And they also regard themselves as ambassadors for the entire Alpine region: twelve tremendous, internationally well known and popular places, all with the same good fortune of being located in one of the world's most breathtakingly gorgeous landscapes.
Wot? No Wengen?
Wot , no 3V?
Wot, no Killy?
Wot do snowheads make of that?!

The 'Best of the Alps' group of resorts has existed for years. It's a self-selecting marketing exercise, so the resorts involved have essentially bought themselves into the scheme.
No, there are several omissions, and a couple of resorts that don't really deserve the tag.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I'm not sure what they mean by "best". I don't read that as them thinking that they are THE best, more that they are 12 of the best and between themselves offer what the Alps are "best" for.
I often find that Euroesque marketing speak is like this.

Endless opportunities for "cultural exchanges" between the local bigwigs! They'll be twinning with Whistler, Tahoe and Queenstown next! </cynicism>

I got the feeling these Alpine resorts are the traditional old skiing resorts aimed at the veteran skiers. They are aiming at a different sector of the market and charge higher prices by quoting the old charm.

saikee, Sorry but Grindelwald has far less charm than either Wengen or Murren in the same area, however Grindelwald is in a different local council area, the others are in the Lauterbrunnen area which has a lot less money to spend on advertising, but I'm not sure why

The omission of Killy seems a bit odd, and the 3V, although rather charmless, is surely too big to ignore. Obviously, size doesn't matter; Kitzbuhel, for example, is a very pleasant place indeed (for me), but the skiing is not massive or challenging.
I suspect that this is one of these marketing exercises aimed at a particular market sector, in this case, upwardly mobile types. All the resorts named either have or have had some social cachet (with the possible exception of St Anton), despite, in some cases, their limitations as ski resorts.
How did Garmisch-Partenkirchen qualify? They held the 1938 (?) winter olympics there, but it's been downhill from then (ho, ho). The skiing is very limited even in a good season, and the town is only OK.

richmond, Your argument 'doesn't cut any ice' (ho, ho, ho!), with the marketing people. The devil is in the title as T-Dub, mentions. What is the definition of "Best" - best for Skiing, or best for ????
Now as an aside to the central part of this thread, what ARE the top/best 10 SKIING Alpine resorts - as voted by skiers! (Things to do before death overtakes etc.) Answers on a postcard here!;

DB,
The 3 lists were obviously drawn up before Les Arcs and La Plagnes were linked together to become Paradiski which will have its own standing because of its 425km piste size and the choice of variable terrains. Not many resorts can charge 45 Euro for a day pass too even if they claim to be one of the best.
