Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Off to LDA next weekend with my 13 year old daughter, lessons booked with easiski. Booking an additional lesson also in the park with lungostyle but she wants me to do it too. FFS I'm 50 and seriously out of shape and it will be on our 7th day of skiing, jumps, halfpipes and me don't mix! Fatherly love has a lot to answer to!

I honestly don't think either of you will be safe in the park after 7 days of skiing, unless you are just watching.

Colin B, Hmmm, my daughter (who was 13 at the time) got me to try one of the rails at MK about 4 years ago.

It was not pretty or clever Sad Isn't there a saying about not teaching old men skiing tricks :!

The bruising took about 2 weeks to fully come out and when it did, I had a 2 foot diameter black/purple/yellow area down one side.

It was about 4 weeks before I could walk again without limping.

Never again will I try such a thing Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Don't do it!!!

Colin B, agree with micky. Snowparks are dangerous places.
A presentation at the 2007 ISSS Congress in Aviemore (page 3) demonstrated:
Quote:
In the snowparks, for all sports included, we observed :
• More dangerous localizations (chest, skull, spine) than on the slopes : 17,8% to 27,6%
• More wrist fractures : 8,4% to 13,2%
• More dislocations : 3;6% to 6%
• More cranial traumatisms (CT) : 2,3% to 3,2%
• An increased gravity of accidents : 4,6% to 7,1% Significant results with P < 0,05, Khi2

More worrying are the reports on jump design (see page 43 onwards of proceedings of ISSS 2007).
There are no standards, and it would seem very little science.
So you take pot luck whenever you try a jump: the landing zone may be completely inappropriate.

I do couloirs. I don't do jumps.

Hmm you guys aren't very re-assuring! I will always wimp out jump by jump I'm not too proud, I tried the half pipe in Zermatt at half term but took a pretty timid line I must admit. My other strategy is get some of the other younger skiers she meets out there to take my place. This is lungostyle BTW Shocked

Just to add to this chorus - I was going up a draglift last year and saw a skier attempting a rail, in a park right alongside the lift. He landed with one leg either side. I felt the pain. A few weeks later saw a pisteur alongside a casualty on the same jump. Looked serious - nothing much happening. More assistance arrived - began to look even more serious. A helicopter arrived.... I never did find out what happened. I'm not a wimp. well, not really. I do occasionally go out on a snowboard and I have had some very painful falls (and I'm far older than you). But park? No. I don't do couloirs OR jumps, but I wouldn't mind working on the skills to do the former. One day, maybe.

Ray Zorro, you were very brave. Not wise, but braver me than me. Twisted Evil

My younger son is now 32. Expert skier, pretty cool boarder. Loves powder, several seasons in the Alps, used to be really daft. For example he smashed his ankle toboganning in Alpbach, dislocated a shoulder leaping off a cliff when he was 18, broke his nose by doing a forbidden dive off a roof into a swimming pool and never told us till an ENT specialist was shining a light up his nose and asked when he'd broken it). He'll have a good go at natural kickers, leaping over pistes, skiing backwards, etc etc. But not parks. He says he's far too old and at 32 he doesn't mend as quickly as he used to.

I admire your fatherly love, Colin. If you want to do something alongside your daughter, get some snowboarding lessons together. She'll be far better than you, but that's the point, isn't it? snowHead

Nooo we ski together and of course she's better than me. Anyway email to book the lesson sent, small jumps I'm up for, definitely no rails.

Jonpim, that's why you inspect the jump and the landing before doing it. Anyone who just jumps without even scoping it out is an absolute idiot.

pam w, did I misunderstand or did you say you're not a wimp because you snowboard too? How is snowboarding proving that you're a not a wimp? Puzzled Apologies if I misunderstood.

Colin B, if you're with someone who knows what he's doing you'll be fine. Just know how far to push it. I also wouldn't worry about the injury statistics. Why let statistics dictate your life! Have some fun. You'll enjoy it.

Colin B, your instructor shouldn't be called an instructor if he takes you far beyond your obvious confidence and ability levels. most parks have a green line for the beginners. afterall, everyone, including the experts had to start somewhere.

i'm in the process of learning freestyle after having no interest in it at all to begin with - i just wanted to learn to snowboard properly, and i'm still getting there. learning to do freestyle allows me to mix up my riding and make it more interesting. give the park lesson a go - you may be pleasantly surprised.

most importantly, do it at your own pace. if your daughter loves skiing as much as we all think she does, she won't wanna lose her ticket to the alps over the next few years (i.e. you!) and besides, she also skis with you so she knows what your ability levels are.

hope you have an amazing time in lda. oh, and get yrself some impact shorts!

Colin B, so. that's cleared that up then...

1. you are mad, don't do it, jumps are x more times risky than normal skiing
2. Go for it! how hard can it be? ignore the naysayers and doom-mongers and have some fun before you get too old!

Timmaah, what I meant was that I'm not afraid of falling over - or I wouldn't have taken up snowboarding when I was an old age pensioner. I also fall more than my companions whilst skiing, often, because I try things which make me fall over - whereas many skiers, especially older ones (and the OP made a particular point about being "old") are far too anxious to avoid falling over. As far as I am concerned, at my age, not being a wimp means not being afraid to try new stuff and fall over. And not giving up the moment you do. At your age, I dare say, it's different. You wait, young man!! Twisted Evil

As a skier I've never even tried a rail (as opposed to the things a few inches accross - don't know what they are called). A boarder only has to get the rail somewhere between his 2 feet but a skier has to get the rail directly under each foot or he'll fall off. Quite apart from not wanting to grind my precious edges steel to steel!

Well I misunderstood your initial post Colin B, I thought you were a beginner.
I started doing the little jumps at LDA after I reached about 3 weeks experience. These are about 1 metre high, probably the smallest jumps in the park on the glacier at LDA in the Summer. After 2 summer trips I'm still doing the same jumps, until I get confident over them I won't try anything bigger.

A friend, who has won international freestyle events so he knows what he is talking about says , when doing jumps "speed is your friend".

good luck, Mike

Agreed, Hubby has bought one in anticipation of his return to skiing after his broken neck. This one seemed to offer good protection for his shoulder blades too, as he is still hurting there.

Colin B, Do you think that you're fit enough to jump of a dustbin onto concrete? . . . well you probably are, good for you . . . Now, are you fit enough to jump off said dustbin when it's being pushed along at 20mph?

''speed is your friend''

Not if you overshoot the landing and do some nice ligament damage.

Seriously though, this shouldn't have provoked so much discussion. The OP said he was getting the lesson, the instructor will not have folks skiing features above the level of the people in his class. Chances are he will use progression from just airing off small rollers then move on to smaller kickers.. if he thinks the OP or anyone else is not up to an acceptable standard he won't suggest they do the jump. Simple.

Go, don't worry about it and enjoy yourself!!

Well the Freestyle lesson took place this afternoon, but without me. My daughter met up with another mini snowHead who also wanted a go so they shared a 2 hour private lesson.

It was much more fun and far less dangerous watching them on the jumps, boxes and halfpipe. than doing it myself.

I am not sure your health would be too good if Natalie knew you were calling her a mini either....
