I've heard about it but can't imagine why you would want to do it unless you can't access any snow.

I skied this back in 2003. Was great fun, around 36° on the day, so your tracks got covered instantly as the sand was so dry, as for destroying the dune............I doubt it, wind makes this stuff.
SMALLZOOKEEPER, I can see that there is some fun aspect, but don't you get sand inside your boots and everywhere else and burns if you fall slide?
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Looks fun to do for a bit of novelty.
With no lift after a few times of walking back up in ski boots you're going to know about it.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

this is apparently quite popular in places like namibia. you'd have to watch out for snakes and scorpions just below the surface though ! that and the no-lifts thingy puts me off somewhat
Otherwise you'll just go on seeing the one name:

YEAH! thats sort of what i had in mind, the massive sand dunes, not that i can just go and ski some sand dune, you could have a weekend skiing instead!
fatbob, I remember seeing a great video somewhere of some guys absolutely ripping some dirt/coal tracks round the back of the Sheffield ski slope. Unfortunately I can't find it online anywhere In the meantime watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=02tR8ornxwM
