Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski jacket has died. Will good hiking hardshell do?

 Poster: A snowHead

First ski trip in seven years. There have been multiple house moves, with ski gear boxed nicely. All our gear has survived apart from my ski jacket which had, in fairness, served me very well over many tours of duty. RIP, you legend.

We'll be skiing for a week and most probably won't have another trip for at least two years. Sooooo... I have a very decent hiking hardshell that I'm planning to marry up with my trusty base layer, midlayer, and heavy layer / fleece underneath.

I wear a small backpack with water bladder while skiing anyway so the relative lack of pockets in a hiking hardshell ain't a concern. The only extra I need is a ski pass holder to strap onto my arm underneath the shell since it doesn't have a pass pocket.

Logically this makes sense to me and avoids me shelling out on a couple of hundred quid.

Am I overlooking anything? Confused

You'll die a horrible slow, agonising death if you try to go skiing in non-ski specific outdoor gear?

Other than that, i can't see a problem. Lift pass in a handwarmer pocket ought to work, no need for it to be on your arm.

Plenty of people use a puffer and a shell instead of an insulated ski jacket. You'll be missing a snow skirt but unlikely to be an issue

Can't see a problem with that @dingbat, as you'll be able to trim your heat by selective layers.

I usually put pass in trouser hip pocket anyway, always works fine for barriers.

I have skied in March using a wool naval issue pea coat to ski powder, so powder in a peacoat sort of day Laughing

@dingbat, all good … people will think you are a hairy arsed guide.

Hardcore.

Only issue is the some hard shells go down low and the hem is too tight for skiing. But you can check that in your living room.

Least I’ve paid on fleabay for a top swedish-brand skiing jacket is …. 12.00

Worth taking a look at: SOS, Peak Peformance, Orage, Elevenate.

@dingbat, yes is the short answer. You want to be warm and dry, and you will be. Far too much faffing and worrying about the right clothing amongst skiers, I have never understood the degrees of debate about this. You are going into a mountain environment so anything that works in that environment will be fine.

@dingbat, All my off piste skiing gear is Multi use, Climbing, Trekking and Ski Touring so you'll be fine with layers.

After 30 Years of skiing, I just use a breathable /thin membrane rain/wind shield, then couple of thin thermal layers(basically thin polyester puffer jackets) + wicking layer on my skin. Works for me. Madeye-Smiley

Or any left-hand-side pocket really. (Scanners tend to be on the LHS).

Not an issue in the slightest

You may find that the hiking jacket, for instance, doesn't have a nice high collar for porr weather (I personally like a nice high collar). But then you're into personal likes and dislikes.

Who buys "skis" jackets anyway?

100% agree with the sentiments above - especially if you're staying in the bounds of the ski resort, so you're not wading knee-deep in powder.
