arriving easy jet geneva airport, which is best side to hire from swiss or french side when driving to chamonix? Any experiences of this???

I have always hired from the swiss side, word is that it's slightly more expensive but it's no faffing about, you drive half a mile and you are on the motorway heading for chamonix.
Holiday autos acted as an agent for Alamo which is immediately outside the arrival hall. Allow a bit of extra time on your return though to find the entrance to the car park where you have to drop off, the sign is very easy to miss, it helps if you have another pair of eyes with you.

Guys, if you hire from the Swiss side, the car already has thr motorway 'vignette' on the car, this ore than makes up for the quite small extra expense. If you hire form Swiss side, you have to buy one.

I can't understand why you all think this is a problem, it's only 40chf for a vignette if the car's not already got one.

ise, I know, not a problem, but I just think it's one less thing to worry about. Where do we get them from for example. What I was getting at was the extra cost of hiring from the Swiss side wasn't 40chf.

This vignette thingy, what's it all about?
I hire a car at least half a doz time per year from Hertz on the Swiss side and drive in France, but I have never been informed about a vignette.
I once got a Swiss cab from GVA to Annecy and he stopped for a tax thingy before entering France. A Gendarme checked this ticked when we entered Annecy from the motorway. Is this the same vignette?

To drive on Swiss motorways you need to pay a special road tax. The little sticker, the vignette, that you fix to your windscreen proves you have paid the tax. All Swiss hire cars will have the vignette which is why you've not been aware of this when hiring at GVA.

When I looked at car hire from Basel, the difference between French & Swiss side was £60.

I booked a rental car on the French side as it was a lot cheaper than on the Swiss side (from Hertz). I changed the booking to the Swiss side because a) I wanted abigger car whic hwasn't available on the French side (where there was only a small choice) and b) I was put off by a thread on the SCGB site saying that access to and from the French side car hire place is awkward; I didn't want to spend half my w/e ski trip driving around the French side of Geneva airport.

Just out of interest....how do you find the French side? I've always hired out of the Swiss side and on return just followed the signs from the motorway which lands you slap bang over the border on the Swiss side....where is the French access??

Exactly! It's a closely guarded secret known only to a few Frenchmen, passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. It seems to involve a tunnel under the runways which may or may not exist and may or may not be open at any given time, rather like a wormhole in the space- time continuum.

Friends of mine drove round to the Swiss side 4 times looking for the French side a week ago. The latter two times even after asking for directions (the navigator is exceedingly good at French, too).

If you hire from the French side you will need to upgrade to get winter tires/chains. These come as standard on the Swiss side. The difference in price with that taken into consideration is not great.
The hassle of finding the French side is NOT worth it!

I accidently found the french side whilst trying to find the flaming drop off place on the swiss side, should have known to turn left at the mangled sign. not a problem tho there is a gap in the central rservation so i just did a u turn (felt a bit like a spy evading border guards) can confirm you go under a tunnel.
