I'm looking at renting skis via SnowRental.net for a trip to Flaine. There is a good price on a model I'd like to use (Dynastar Contact 10), but it's from 2006 or 2007. Wouldn't a ski that old be knackered by now, after 2-3 seasons' rental?

I wonder how long rental shops normally keep their stock? I wouldn't have imagined for more than 2 seasons, normally. Anyone know anything more? The place I'm looking at isn't trying to hide the fact that the skis are 2006 ones, which is good. I can probably get the same models from 2008 at a slightly higher price, which I'll go for if I can.

J2R, depends on the competition, I should think. Rented some absolute rubbish from a shack at the bottom of the Alpspitz (or whatever it's called) at Garmisch, where you're already past all the other shops and looking at the slopes. No choice, and what they had were knackered, no edge, gouges in all the wrong places, must have been 4 years old if a day. But the company was paying so I thought better that to look a gift horse...

How can I test them for knackeredness? I don't mean obvious things like gouged bases, etc., more that they may have lost their 'pop'.

It isn't the age - it is how many weeks they have been used - what the core is etc etc. For a specialist top-end ski which doesn't get hired out much you might be fine. For a foam-cored punter ski 2-3 years rental might be too much.

The Dynastar Contact 10 has a wood core. It's a reasonably high-end ski which might mean it doesn't get hired out much (although the older ones might, being cheaper to hire). On the other hand, might it not be the case that more advanced skiers tend to bend the skis a lot more than less experienced skiers, being more dynamic, and thus speed up the aging process?
