Hi all, after spending 2 great weeks skiing in Canada and just back I can warn all of you who plan on getting a premium wax to be carefull.
Point one: My skiis went to the "Tuning Shop" in Banff, I think an Aussie guy runs it, I paid $25 for a premium wax only, I do my own edges and tuning.
After 2 or 3 runs down the piste the bases were patchy and white/dry, all the wax had gone, so obviously I complained, asked for a refund and another Free wax, which I got... they told me that my bases were very dry and that the skis needed a real good tune up! ( I had been over to Jons with them and the tuning was perfect as was the hotwax) and I had been on top of the edge tuning with my little diamond file.
So off they went for the second wax, which to be honest was firstly free and secondly great, it lasted for the rest of my trip, some 5 days skiing.
Point 2: Make sure that if you dont want your edges tuned that you clearly tell them so, as my second wax also came with the edges redone, great I hear you say..not so bloody great when they changed the edge angles!!!
My Salomons are stated as 1 degree base and 2 degrees side, checked at Jons and correct. When I came to retouch my edges after a bit of rocky off piste I noticed that my 1 degree base was having no effect on the edge at all and when I tried the 2 degree fine file on the side edge it only removed a strip half the width of the edge...yes the Fitzwilliam had shaved my side to 3 degrees and god knows what my base angle is now, but its more than 1 degree thats for sure.
So beware using the "Tuning Shop" in Banfftell them if you dont want your edges doing, Also this is where most of the hotels and ski hire shops use.
Cheers
Mark

If you need a good wax or tune in Banff, then I've always found Ultimate to be pretty good (on Banff Avenue, just the other side of Caribou St. from the Mount Royal)
