When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Two reindeer herders have survived for six days under snow after an avalanche smothered their tents at the foot of a volcano in Kamchatka, far eastern Russia. They had pitched their tents directly under a snow overhang.
Nine members of their group died in the disaster...

This is a rare example of exceptional luck in surviving snow burial in a demolished structure, albeit with the result of severe frostbite. Colin Fraser's book 'The Avalanche Enigma', published in 1966, tells of a man involved in the construction of a hydro-electric dam near Heiligenblut in Austria in the early 1950s who was even luckier. An avalanche in the night smashed into his hut and left him trapped, pinned down and injured in a tiny space.
He survived 11 days until he was found alive. The story is astonishing and told in considerable detail - the most remarkable in a remarkable book which is well worth searching out. A later edition of this book was published under a different title which I've forgotten - can anyone let us know?
