Details are emerging of a rare and remarkable ski rescue by a specialist team in the Wicklow Mountains that saved four motorists trapped in snow which had drifted up to 1.5m deep. [The Wicklow Mountains lie south of Dublin - map here]
Reports from:
The Press Association and a more detailed piece by Irish Times.
Hopefully we'll get more information on this.

More on the Wicklow Mountains ski rescue:
This report from the Irish Independent
Quote: |
"We're claiming it to be Ireland's first ski rescue, we hope it is," Anne Fitzgerald of Wicklow Mountain Rescue said yesterday, after the four men were safely airlifted off the mountain a short time later ... In the early hours of yesterday morning, the team changed tack and came in by a western approach, eventually reaching a spot about three miles from the stranded motorists.
Two of the more advanced rescuers had to ski the rest of the way carrying special "blizzard bags" with thermal insulation gear and food, arriving at 7am. |
Anyone skied on an Irish mountain? I stayed on the mountainous Dingle Peninsula a few years back - spectacular place - and was told by a local farmer that snow is really rare and insignificant on that terrain (though it looks really glaciated, historically). The Conor Pass is a real high-mountain pass, but he said snow never had to be cleared from it.

David Goldsmith, I have been skiing in them for the past few days. I live in Eniskerry and since Sunday have skied Djouce, Kippure,Lugnaquilla and scalp.
The conditions have been particulary good around Glen Crí, The mountains and the area are the only reason I moved home from America. One of our Near neighbours has somthing to do with the mountain resuce, I will ask when I see him over the weekend

Peter Ross, Amazing, we drove to as far as we could and hiked up with skis, boots strapped to the bag and then down we go. Snow was amazing I could have been in any alpine Village. About 10-15 cm in Places and light and fluffy.
Snow was alot heavier on Tuesday more moisture in it I guess. But it was great to do. Was going to head up to the ski club but I heard Dendex and snow dont go well so I just headed out to nature and hiked it.
There where a few guys up at Glen Crí doing 10 foot cliff drops with spins and grabs and all that freestyle stuff that looks cool but I wouldnt dare do

The motorist were airlifted right over my house. I saw the helicopter and suspected that there was some idiot that tried to pass the infamous sallys gap over the wicklow mountains. First ski rescue.... impressive or just an excuse to whip out the skis??

There are some suggestions there. Pretty much anywhere in the wicklow mountains that you can get to will have great snow. I recommend avoiding the blessington area though. Roads are pretty much blocked. I reckon the more greystones or bray area might be worth a look.
