You can either take your passport along and they scan that
or
They use a webcam to take a picture of you.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks for that......I also wanted opinions on which would be the best other resort in the "ski Grande Galaxie system" as we get a free day's pass in 1 of the other resorts. You can choose from resorts such as Les Deux Aples, L’Alpe d’Huez, Puy St Vincent, la Voie Lactée, Montgenevre, Sestriere, sauze d oulx, La Grave and Briançon. We are a group of 5 ranging from mid to strong intermediate ability with my preference being long cruising reds with good quality snow (usually found on the higher altitude runs) - with as little traffic as possible (going on the 28 Feb after the French hols)
Cheers

1. Briancon is part of the Serre Chevalier area - you can ski there from Chantmerle. Serre Che's skiing is in my top 10 areas - after skiing 120+ areas. It's fantastic - very varied.
2. There are no pistes at La Grave - and only one main lift. It's an off piste mecca where a guide is strongly recommended.
3. Been to all of the "normal" areas on your list except Puy St Vincent. All would be fine for you based on your cruising reds criteria - especially as you are only going for a day. Montgenevre (which also accesses the Voie Lactee/Milky Way/Via Lattea) is probably the easiest to get to by road from Serre Chevalier. Sauze d'Oulx and Sestriere are at the far end of the Voie Lactee from Montgenvre. All are covered by the same lift pass. Links from Montgenevre to the Via Lattea are not great (eg there's an up and down chairlift through a valley that can't be skied)but it's do-able. We loved Alpe D'Huez but found Les 2 Alpes to be a bit of a strange narrow ski area, with a few crowded bottlenecks.
4. French school hols usually last until the first week of March - which is when we skied Alpe d'Huez and found it not too bad.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

SCOUSE,
Unless the system has changed you can go to more than one of the resorts I think, it's just that you can only go to any individual one once.
Unless you actively enjoy driving Alpe d'Huez is a bit more of a nuisance as it is significantly furthur to drive to than any of the others, and from my experience hardest to find parking close to the lifts.
My experience fo the areas is that Voie Lattee is the least croded and easisest to get too of the bigger resorts and has plenty of long cruising reds though it lacks the more difficult pistes that L2A and Ad'H have. PSV is a really nice resort for a day trip as you can see allthe pistes and they are pleasantly varied. If there are high winds at Serre Che it is worth going to as it is more sheltered from the west,
