Poster: A snowHead

Hi,
Sorry if this was discussed earlier in this forum, but quick search revealed no results.
Basically what I want is to get an insurance for my Tignes trip. In fact, I already have one but it only covers medical expenses and some useless things such as missed plane, avalanche closure, etc.
What I really want is an insurance which would pay my bills (mortgage included) if I brake my leg and wouldn't be able to work for half a year or even more. Assuming I don't go off-piste I might sound a bit too much cautious, but my situation requires this!
I have looked at (and called a couple of) various insurance websites but couldn't find anything useful. The closest case I managed to find was "Permanent total disablement" which only handles extreme cases, such as amputation.
There are some "income protection" insurance packages in the market but I'm afraid they have exclusions for things like ski&snowboarding trips. Moreover, one typically needs to sign the papers few months in advance in order to claim whereas I'm departing at the end of this week.
Any advice is much appreciated.

mindas, never seen such insurance - I think it is a risk you have to bear.
Welcome to snowheads.

I would say you have left it too late. Whenever I have had this and key man cover, the insurers have wanted medicals and it has taken a while to set up.

You need Income replacement cover. You choose the monthly income you need to be covered (no more than 2/3 rds your income) and then pay a monthly premium. This will cover you if you are too ill to work. Policies can be on an own occupation definition or a works task one which is cheaper. The shortest deferral period is typically 4 weeks before benefit starts although there are a couple of companies that specialise in 1 week deferral for a premium. Basically the longer the deferral period the cheaper the premium.

What dk100 said. I have it and it covers me for all the 'risky' sports I do - ie flying and skiing. Unfortunately you've no chance of sorting it at this short notice, but maybe for future reference?

Thanks a lot everyone, it seems I will have to rely on my employer's contract policy (have a reasonable amount of days covered annually).
It's just seems a bit strange that I seem to be the only one looking for options out there.
Also, it's a bit strange why would short deferral be a problem - I don't really want an insurance based on pre-existing conditions but only trip accident, similar to travel insurance; should be no brainer!
Sounds like a business opportunity, doesn't it?

mindas, income cover is generally a seperate policy in its own right to cover you if you're sick or injured, regardless of cause.
Welcome to BTW

mindas, there are persaonl accident and illness policies available in the market, NFU Mutual is the first insurer that springs to mind. This will cover the standard death/loss of limb type capital sums cover but will also have extensions available to Permanant Total Disablement, Permanent Partial Disablement, Temporary Total Disablement and Temporary Partial Disablement. These are normally a weekly sum insured that you reach by buying a number of units. The excess is normally one week unpaid although you can extend this to reduce the premium. The maximum period payable is normally 104 weeks.
Things you will need to look out for are exclusions relating to leisure activities, if your occupation is low risk (office work) then you will need to disclose any riskier leisure activities such as motorcycling, wintersports and the like to ensure you get the cover you need. These sort of policies are generally aimed at the self employed. PM me if you'd like to more info and suggestions on markets to try.

Been involved in various high risk sports over the years and never heard of a company that would pay for something like that. If it was available it would probably cost a fortune then when you went to claim you would find a clause that said you couldn't.

flying planet, policies are available as outlined above, they pay a weekly amount whilst you are unable to work through accident or illness depending on the cover you specify. They are rated generally on your occupation. Of course there are exclusions which would need to be looked at but to be honest its a pretty standard cover. However it is an annual policy not a short term cover you take out to cover a specific trip. It is aimed at self employed people who dont have the benefit of sick pay from their employer should they be unfit to work for a temporary period of time. Some polices can be restricted to occupational accidents only but these tend to be group policies taken out by an emplouyer to protect their interests rather than a personal policy where cover is 24hrs (subject to the policies terms and conditions).
Basically these policies do exist, as with any insurance the quality of wordings in variable, as its a more complex contract than say a travel insurance policy they might not be so easy to purchase online/direct therefore would suggest talking to a broker or even a financial consultant as whilst it is a general insurance contract anything relating to income protection does sometimes fall into the realms of an IFA.

When I broke my achilles tendon skiing, my employer's insurance covered the operation and physio in the UK - and thanks to my laptop I was able to carry on doing my work -albeit a bit bizarrly when I had to have my ankle higher than my hip.
The need for insurance does depend on an individual's circumstances.
