Hi all,
I've just booked a trip to Montgenevre, or the 'Milky Way' as I'm lead to believe, on the 21st Feb.
Anyone got any opinions, advice on the resort? ( Not too many damming reviews please )
Wurzel.

its linked to the via letta (milky way) in italy...but its really to far out to make it a viable ski..but theres plenty to be had there and in neighbouring Claveire..so you just need the monte luna pass (it think..theres another thread with more details if you do a search) Montgenevres a bit ugly but new tunnel and lifts crossing the road and connecting the two areas makes the skiing good, still some old lifts around. Mainly crusiey inter stuff.

I don't think its ugly (now Sestrierre in the same circuit really is ugly!) and the slopes are quite pretty with good tree skiing and a fair amount of off-piste which nobody skis.
You can perfectly well ski to the far edge of the circuit and back in a day, but it is quite far and you may find enough in the nearer parts unless you like to pack in the miles.

Would agree. It's far from ugly. There's also a new lift open this year on the north side which makes it easier to get around up there.
As has been said, lots of good, very good, skiing both on and off piste. We too were amazed how quiet the area is off piste. L'Aigle offers lots of options if you're looking for an off piste option.
This year is a very good snow year for the whole area. Record breaking early season snow falls are being regularly topped up. Make sure and venture over to Claviere. It's a cracking wee place that is often so quiet it feels like you have the whole place to yourself. Better mountain food over there as well.
What level of skier are you/your group and folk will give more precise options as far as the skiing goes.

The ski areas nice, but the resort itself is one of the ugliest I've been to...though it is also the only french one I've every been to.

It is has a few appartment blocks which I wouldn't let be built if I was a local town planner. However on the whole it isn't ugly. It is definitly not in the same category as La Plagne, La Daille and Tignes which all have hideous looking buildings.
Pictures to justify that it is pretty. The centre is rather nice with a church and oldish/tradtional buildings. The mountains surrounding the area are pretty specatuclar with the Ecrins National Park, Pic du Rochebrune and Chaberton dominating the villages skyline.
There are prettier resorts, but it isn't bad.

Area has improved a lot recently with new lifts and links and a ski bridge piste connecting the two sides across the road.
Nightlife is limited a couple of night clubs and a handful of bars. There is just on Pub, Le Graal which has quite a good atmosphere and an open fire in the evening.
Depending on where you are staying there are some steepish paths in the resort that can get icy and slippy at night.
It was a few years ago I was there, and I liked it when we went back for the day / evening from Claviere last week.

There is a great variety of skiing in Montgenevre, but the 6 day pass also includes a day in the wider Via Lattea area so definitely worth checking out. As previous poster suggests its quite a hike but if you're on the first lift in the morning you can pretty much spend some time in Sestriere as well as Claviere and Sauze d'oulx. It's a failrly quiet resort but there are a couple of bars worth checking out (La Graal as mentioned above) and it will be busy that week anyway.

This photographer has managed to make it look beautiful:

I enjoyed a holiday there in 2001, often has nice snow when other places don't. Old village centre has some charm, newer buildings aren't always so sympathetic. Mountains are always beautiful, especially when covered with lovely white stuff.
A long trek over to Sauze or Sestriere, but quite a bit in Montgenevre/Claviere to keep you busy. Low-key nightlife and only one self-service mountain restaurant, probably best to lunch at the village or over at Claviere. Tunnel that takes traffic away from centre must have improved things too.
Historic fortified valley town of Briancon worth a look if you want an afternoon off one day, plenty of buses there and back.
Enjoy!

Yes, Briancon is amazing if you have to take a day off skiing. I ricked my back and had to take 2 days off.

Cheers for all the info peeps.
Resort sounds pretty good to be honest and the pictures are really nice (thanks for those).
We've booked the trip through Skitopia and the hotel we are staying at is the Hotel la Grange.
My friend and I are pretty competent boarder/skier, but I'm not too sure about his friends and GF, so that could be interesting. But by the sounds of it theres a decent range of slopes to cater for all.

You know it makes sense.

Pretty or ugly probably depends where you were staying - I didn't really see the French end but the old centre and the bit my side of it was almost all traditional chalets.
