Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Anyone stayed in Zell am Ziller

It looks as if it could be a reasonable option, linked to Mayrhofen by train and the Zillertal arena is quite a decent sized area of it's own! But I'd like to canvas opinion if anyone has stayed there.

I stayed there last year (Hotel Brau with Crystal).

Yes, it does have a very good sized area of its own - needs the (free) bus from the centre of town to reach the area though.

You are also fairly centrally placed for going either up the valley to Mayrhofen (best to enter the Mayrhofen ski area from Hippach via the Horbergbahn rather than using the crowded Penkenbahn lift) or down the valley to Kaltenbach (another very good ski area) or Fugen. Any of those are reached by train, with the station in walking distance from most of the town centre hotels. Again, the train is free with lift pass (except the special steam trains).

Nightlife is a LOT quieter than in Mayrhofen.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

janette, sorry haven't stayed there, but skied there a couple of weeks ago - great place IMHO, really enjoyed it. Some superb runs and plenty of variety. As you say, the train link (free with the Zillertal ski pass) to other areas is extremely good.

Alex,
It's the Hotel Brau with Crystal that I've been looking at.
I'm not bothered about the nightlife!
I've managed to ski a couple of weeks at Mayrhofen without doing much more than skiing, sauna, eating and sleeping.

I found it a very nice hotel indeed, and would very willingly go back there.

The rooms were pretty standard, but the staff were friendly and helpful, the food was excellent, the wellness area was spacious, airy and pleasant.

The ski bus stops about 30 yards from the door to the ski storage area (which had heated boot racks), and the train station is about 250 yards from the hotel.

Alex, Good to hear that, it ticks a lot of the boxes that I require for a happy ski week and is still quite economical.
Just felt that Crystal gets so much negative comment I should ask about it. I don't need much from a rep in Austria as I can blunder quite reasonably in German, I just need to be delivered to the hotel, so the attitude the Crystal reps are reputed to have should not be a problem!
I have been to Zell in the summer when walking, is the Brau nearer the river or railway side of the centre of town, I believe it to be in Dorfplatz, which is in the middle of town?

janette, It between the railway and the river, nearer the railway.

The road that runs outside the railway station (Bahnhofstrasse) comes to a junction with Dorfplatz in the middle of town, and the Brau is right on that junction.

If you walk out of the hotel and along Dorfplatz away from the river, you come to the railway level crossing in under 100m, with the Zillertal Brewery just the other side of it, and Intersport on your side of it.

I actually enjoyed skiing with the reps. They did three guided days, Sunday in the Penken area, Tuesday in the Ski-Optimal (Kaltenbach and Hochfugen) and Thursday in the Zillertal Arena. They were making a small charge for a bus down from Mayrhofen to the other two areas, but were happy for those of us joining them from Zell to just meet them at the base of the appropriate gondola (the top of the Penken gondola that day).

janette, This was my very first ever ski holiday, on my own, and I loved it! The ski area is fine and you do need to take the bus there but it's only a few minutes. Lovely village with a river (the Ziller) running through it, very pretty. I stayed in the Tirolerhof first time (I think that was it - long time ago!) and the Engelhof the 2nd time, which was lovely. Sure you'll like it. The train goes from Zell to Mayrhofen too, but I've only done that in the summer, so not sure how practical it would be in ski boots! Have a lovely time Very Happy

Thanks everyone,
Alex, I have placed where the hotel is from your description and from when we went through the town on our summer trip.
We came along from Mayrhofen by train and went over to walk from the Rosenbahn lift. We had to have a go on the Arena Coaster, en route, which was great fun, not just for the kids! It snowed on us up there in July, not our best walking holiday for weather.
I've booked it now. I think that we can use the train to Mayrhofen some days to ski with the Ski Club rep there and explore the Zillertal Arena ourselves on others. I wouldn't want to spend the whole week just skiing with my husband!
