To come back to the OP, can anyone say where Times Online got this story. I haven't heard of helmets being made mandatory in Austria and I can't find any mention of it in the German language skiing forum I follow. The idea has been/is being discussed but I don't believe any decisions have been reached. And, practically seen, I can't imagine anyone introducing such regulations in the middle of a season.

I think it was about the same time that "Key Stage Assessments" were introduced.
I believe it was with the idea that the whole period of education should be more "integrated". So that instead of the psychologicaly huge step of going from "Primary" to "Secondary" school, you just went from "Year 6" to "year 7".
Or more likley, just fiddling for the sake of it

There're actually more helmet threads in 
's now than there are snowheads and in fact (in between working, sleeping and eating) the average snowhead spends 0.61% of their life actually skiing and 94.32% of their life debating helmets. Apparently all the research now shows that debating helmet use actually makes no difference as to what people think of helmets although contributing to helmet threads does keep your head warm but exposes you to sanctimonious ranting from people who don't really give a monkey's anyway.
