bertie bassett,
Last time I travelled it, it was under repair and since it is a steep sided valley I would imagine the road is subject to closure from time to time..from either rock falls or snow..
Sorry, not much help but ask Pam W... she might know...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes, but the Val d'Arly is frequently closed due to rockfall, so you might have a bit of a detour.

As above, i.e. usually open. In recent years, there seems to have been frequent works with diversions following minor roads.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I have used this road alot, its usually open though would agree with the other posts it can be shut or detour due to landslides etc. The road is not very high, but it gets a little difficult towards ugine. The pass from la clusaz to flumet, connecting with this road is much higher

Yes, the above comments accord with my experience - though I hardly ever drive through it, these days, I turn off. I read somewhere that it's the most expensive length of road in France to maintain, because of the rockfalls. It's often closed to HGVs (probably because the diversions are onto very small and winding roads) but it's generally open to cars.

If it was closed, Megeve wouldn't be getting much business, would it?

bad_roo, the problems are always beyond Megève. I've never known the Sallanches - Megève section to be closed.

And we can guess that BB is trying to get from BSM to the zoo.....

the problems are always way beyond Megeve - on the section just between Ugine and Flumet. It's often closed to HGVs and there are frequently diversions. But it would be posted up well in advance if it were closed to cars.

I went through there at the beginning of December from Ugine to St Gervais and it was closed for a part of the way just after Ugine, but there was a diversion of about 3 miles and it wasn't a problem even though I still had summer tyres on

I noticed today the conditions for the "Gorge Val d'Arly" are posted on the front page of the Megeve website when there is snow
