Please Help Snowheads.
Just thought I could ask a quick question from your experience please..
Never been to either.. So..
A friend that has been there and said that Hinterglemm attracts the German Tourist and Saalbach is the destination for the Brittish.
Looking at the piste map it seems that Hinterglemm seems more adventurous & therefore more attractive..
So, could I ask is there this much difference in Tourists in the resorts or is my freind blowing a trumpet he couldn't play in the first place.

They are very similar. I think Hinterglem is a bit more compact so therefore the apres ski seemed to be a bit more lively. Skiing wise it makes no difference what your start point is as it wont take long to reach the other resort (if your a reasonable skiier) or you could go on the ski bus. There does seem to be more brits in saalbach and there is a british bar called bobbys.
Sometimes we use to start our day in saalbach and finish in hinterglemm going to a bar called the goastall that is about 100 meters up a piste and was full by 3pm! I would stay there till about 7pm and then do a few runs on the night ski run. Great fun.

I've stayed in Saalbach twice, and was based Hinterglemm last week for the first time:
* Slopes - all well connected so for an decent intermediate and upward no real difference. Hinterglemm offers better/more slopes for lower intermediates.
* Convenience - I'd say that more of the hotels in Hinterglemm are closer to the slopes. Much of Saalbach is a 10 minute walk to the slopes.
* Nightlife - Saalbach has a wider choice of restaurants and bars. But you can get a wide variety of good bars/restaurants in both.
* Cost - typically Hinterglemm hotels command a slightly lower price. The resort is cheaper than big French resorts (e.g expect to pay about €4 for a large beer, and €7 for a spag-bol on the mountain). If you shop around the prices are about the same, but we found some of the shops/bars in Saalbach were more expensive
* Nationalities - both are made up primarily of German visitors, with a strong dutch and british/irish contingent. Saalbach seemed to have a greater proportion of English people.

if you do go, book friday (in advance as it gets busy) night at the hotel peter magic show (if you like steak) in saalbach. We had a great night there last year and my wife was the "victim" and stood on the stage and had a blade go through her arm! it was very funny and a good meal too!
Also if your hungry or thirsty on the slopes try the thuneralm above saalbach for cheap beer (2.5 eur a pint !) are you listening france?!! and great food, especially the ribs, they are superb.

Tim Tastic, There is no diffrence in relation to the skiing accesiable from either village if you are any way competent
Couple of things The night skiing is in Hinterglem so is the main apres bar the goatstall, other than that both the towns are very similar. If you stay in Saalbach you will be closer to Leogang but again if you can ski you will be there in no time. Bobbys is good craic especially for the Karaoke.
There is a massive strip bar in Sallbach Kings or somthing according to Fall Line its the best one in an Alpine resort

Tim Tastic, if you stay in Saalbach, Bauers is the best apres ski.
As daveqpr said, Thurneralm is about the best place on the hill.

Tim Tastic, taxis and buses are pretty regular all along the valley so it doesn't really matter too much. If the whole area is open then prsonally I would stay in or around Saalbach... aim to end up in Hinterglemm for the Apres ski, then back to Saalbach for food and the nightlife.

Just a heads up an Irish radio station is Bringing approx 500 people for their annual ski trip to Saalbach the week starting the 31st. I am sure the town will be hopping
