The World Cup circus has arrived in Wengen, Switzerland, for a 'new improved' Lauberhorn event this weekend. Friday will see a 'super combination' race (short downhill and slalom in one day), followed by the classic on Saturday - the showcase downhill.
This report by Mark Ledsom for Reuters.

BTW, it's not easy to track down when and where the Lauberhorn is being transmitted on TV, live or recorded. I've a feeling Channel 4 don't have rights, and the BBC Ski Sunday page is no help. Any pointers welcome!

So, is it the case that neither Channel 4 nor the Beeb are broadcasting this great downhill?
It would be very interesting to have the inside story on this, unless (hopefully) I've got the story wrong, because it may suggest that the price was pitched too high for the 'terrestrial' broadcasters. It gets a bit crazy if internationally-important sport isn't available to all to see and enjoy.

2 in the morning 2 days late ! what the heck is wrong with these blasted people, BBC can only show Austrian races where ORF have the right to sell them and channel 4 which supposedly bid about the same as the beeb for the FIS rights, but promissed more coverage are putting it on at 2 in the morning.
No wonder nobody watches skiing on TV nobody remembers to put it into their VCR, added to that they are going to cover 6 or is it 8 races (with the new combined special race at Wengen ) if it's anything like their other shows it will comprise 45 mins of N. Fellows face, 30 mins of spectators faces with close ups of judges, pisteurs etc and the rest will be the races

One problem is that Chanel No. 4 (beautifully fragrant, but not quite on the ball) don't tell snowHeads their ski schedule. They're welcome to pop in here every week and tell us what's coming up!

The trial combined event outcome in this article from the Independent and seems to be judged a success
Quote: |
Norwegian veteran Lasse Kjus, who won the traditional combined here in 1999, ...... a combined specialist who has won gold in the event at both the world championships and Olympics, praised the combined's revamped format.
The new event is composed of a downhill run and a slalom leg staged only a few hours apart on the same day. The traditional combined event added the times from the weekend's downhill to those of the weekend's slalom, as will be the case in Kitzbuehel next week.
"This new super-combi format is the only way to go," said Kjus, who arrived in the finish area to the sound of thousands of fans singing "Happy Birthday" in honor of his 34th. "I think it makes things more fair. Only one leg for the slalom skiers because it is so difficult for downhillers to make two good slalom runs. And a shorter downhill that makes it possible for the slalom skiers to complete OK."

Great action on Channel 4 this morning. And I wonder how much quicker Finlay may have been had he not caught so much air on that huge jump. How he got that back together is anyone's business - I thought he was a gonner for sure! Superb result.
