Poster: A snowHead

Sorry if I've started another thread...
We're off to St Gervaise next month. Never been there! Does anyone have any recommendations for restaurants/bars for the evening? We are not looking for anything fancy.
Thanks in advance...

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Battlezone, We were there in the summer and tried a couple of restaurants (not really bars as we were with the kids) - one in particular was nice but I'm not 100% sure of the name. It's something like L'Eterle - it's at the end of the village nearest the bridge over the gorge and the Bettex gondola (you'll see when you get there!) and has a terrace outside, wood-fired oven inside, we had pizzas and pasta but there were various meat dishes. Everything was very good, nice atmosphere, good service, reasonable prices (especially compared to one of the others we tried).

Battlezone,
We've just come back from St. Gervais after spending New Year there. Had an excellent time...it's a very traditional pretty french town. We spent New Year's eve in a bar next to the 'Jardin Public' (can't remember name...one too many beers ) that had a really nice atmosphere.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Battlezone, Being a family with an 11 year old and a somewhat diminished budget due to the euro/sterling debacle we've not been eating out a great deal since we came here. However out current favourite is Le Royal opposite the market square mainly because it has a 'slightly' more varied choice of fayre from the usual savoyarde suspects and will put vegetables on your plate if you ask them! Friendly too and will happily converse in English or let you practise your French if you wish. The pur bar is also quite nice for a drink in slightly more sophisticated surroundings with free wifi. If you're staying out towards the telecabine, the yucatan bar has a reputation for being reasonably lively ...the caveat being that this is by St Gervais standards so no guarantees of a wild time!

Thanks for the replies everone. It sounds like a quiet resort. That's OK. As we are self catering and only there for 5 days we will probably give a couple of the venues mentioned a try.
Our chalet/apartment is just up from the St Gervais Lift. Apparantly about 10 minutes walk away. Hopefully there is enough snow to allow us to ski down to it.

Battlezone, What's the name of the residence? I may know it and be able to tell you how likely skiing down is!

The run down to St Gervais is very rarely open. You usually go up and down in the lift.

Battlezone, Hi - yes, I know it! It's where we stayed (kids wanted a pool) - we did think the hill down which we walked to get to the road for the village, WOULD be skiable in the winter If not, and you have a car, you could drive down in a couple of minutes and park at the gondola, but best check with the owners to be sure. If you can't ski down that bit, I doubt you could walk it in snow, but if you can, there are ski lockers at the mid-station (apparently) so you wouldn't need to attempt it in boots!

I have just come back from St Gervais and the run down was skiable and fresh snow was falling. So, looks like your lucky year. Having said that, it is a run which we often choose not to do even if it is open, since the snow gets scratchy and it becomes tiring (which was not ideal for the end of the day when the children were younger). Our usual plan was to book lockers up at Le Bettex.

Anniepen, It's mentioned in the bumf that it's possible to ski back down to the apartment if the town route is open??? Is that so?

Battlezone,
we stayed at the exact same apartments over new year. You can indeed ski to the apartment if you fancy it. The run can get quite rocky/thin in places though, but if you're decent skiers shouldn't be a problem!
